I got my date last week, and in my intro I mentioned I haven’t told hardly anyone. I am getting more and more nervous as the days pass. I have an incredible team I’m working with, but it’s just a lot at once! Especially right before Christmas, however I am excited to change my life for the better, it’s just so much!!

Congrats on your surgery date! What a wonderful Christmas present for yourself!! I was nervous before I got my surgery date, then once I got my date it put everything to perspective. It was real, I was ready, and this was the best way to gain control of my life.

I have been so incredibly amazed at how helpful, and encouraging my doctor, psychologist, dietitian, and rest of the care team has been. I know i want to do this for my health, and to live a long life, its just always a nervous feeling before something major i suppose!

This was so helpful! My boyfriend, cousin, and best friend know. But I don’t want to tell anyone else really, I’m just worried about Christmas since I’ll be in “phase 2” post op. & seeing my family. So I won’t be eating normal. Additionally, I’m a nurse, but the provider I work for is VERY fat phobic, and judge mental. I don’t care what she says, but I don’t want to be in a toxic work environment if that makes sense?! Im leaning towards not telling anyone ahead of time. My FMLA was approved, I was told I didn’t have to discuss my medical with my direct manager just inform them. But it’s still hard dodging the questions. I appreciate your response!

My only advice on the workplace situation is be careful. We used to have a member who decided not tell at work and someone there found out. She felt she wasn’t in control of how they found out after when all the rumors started. I’m a stay at home mom, so I didn’t have a work to tell, but I did tell everyone in my life. I wasn’t shy about it being known on FB or Twitter. I’m proud of my decision and choosing to keep it a secret doesn’t mean you’re not. I would just caution that you have a plan if rumors start circulating.

I did tell everyone at work. I did more to ask that no one call in on the day of my surgery to make things easier for my husband who had to get me to the hospital and run work for the day. Everyone did come in the entire week. I think because I am the boss I do get less people who say anything to me about it. I have some who feel they need to tell me if my shirts are too big. But all and all I would do the same again.

I think it was best just coming from me not from the rumor going around.

For me family has been the problem I have some whom I feel like that want me to fail. Like bring me cheesecake into my work for me. I am still working on my ways to deal with them. I am done doing holidays so this will be a big help.

Good luck with everything

I didn’t tell anyone at all aside from my husband. Still haven’t. I had my surgery in March, and due to COVID wasn’t really visiting friends or family. I also work from home so I pretty much took the day and day after off from work, then rested the weekend, and was back online that Monday. But that’s very much MY situation. I am not endorsing rushing back to work etc. it just worked ok for me. Anyways, I have lost 85 pounds and it’s funny some people don’t even mention how different I look, others comment (it’s only been positive), and the rest ask my husband if I am ok...sick? He assures them I am fine, just focusing on healthy options mostly protein and they seem to be satisfied with that. The timing of your surgery is sort of great - after a few weeks you can just tell people you are working hard on your annual New Years resolution to get healthier! :)

I told everyone. However, as you can see from the different responses, the decision to tell/who to tell is very personal. I found most people had a positive reaction and some people are jerks. Much like every situation in real life. I figured there is always gossip/questions when someone starts to lose a lot of weight anyway, so I would address it head on.

Congrats on your date. I know it's close to Christmas but you are going to start 2022 as a new, healthier you.
