:eek:I am 1 year post surgery and lately have found that my alcohol consumption is becoming a problem. I seem to have trouble stopping once I start and of course I don't handle it as well as before. I have always been a social drinking and never had any problems before. I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this and if the only solution is to stop alcohol consumption completely?

Mackrm-Welcome to the forum. Excess alcohol comsumption after WLS is quite common. The only advice I can give is to start attending AA meetings immediately. You will find excellent support there. And yes, you need to stop drinking alcohol completely.

Hi Mackrm, Welcome and congratulayions on your weight loss. My name is Tom I had the RnY in April 2010 and lost all control of my alcohol consumtion december of 2010, I was told abstain from alcokol for 6 months and recommended to wait a year, I don't think a year would have made a difference. My alcoholism progressed very quickly once i started drinking again and I would go into full on DT's by July of 2011 when I wouldn't drink for more than 16 hours, it was a horrid experience, not one I recomend anyone go through. Alcoholism is a progressive ilness and Gastric Bypass patients are more likely to develope it than someone who hasn't had it. Please talk to your doctor about this, if you are not yet experiencing withdrawls or the compulsion to drink then you may be able to stop on your own but remember one important thing, you can never, never , NEVER DRINK SAFELY again. If you are experiencing withdrawls or a compulsion to drink please look into going to AA. I would like to chat more, I am off to an AA meeting myself. Please let me know how you are doing. Tom

Alcohol Consumption

I have not gotten to the point of going to AA, and do not feel a compulsion to drink, but when I do have a drink it hits me so hard I feel like I have been drinking all night! I do still have a drink on occasion, but never without my husband present to help me stop after one drink. This seems to be working for me at the moment.
