I know I talk a lot about Okie but I also have another pet called Bobbin who is our baby girl. She is a 12-1/2 year old Green Cheek Conure. We adopted her, when she was a baby, shortly after we lost our Senegal Parrot, who died at a young age of only 4 years old of a rare nuerologic disease.
I hate to compare the two of birds, but it is almost impossible not to. They are as different as night and day.
O.G.the Senegal, was interactive and love to learn tricks, eat at our table, and share our food. I think she thought she was one of us.
Bobbin, not so much. The only time Bobbin behaved really well is when we were picking out which bird we wanted take home. She was a scam artist.
Now I'm not saying Bobbin isn't a good girl, because she is. She's a total mama's girl. She likes to sit on my shoulder and nestle into my neck to cuddle. She is a total cuddler, as long as it's with me, and Okie is locked out of the room.
If I'm lying in bed, Bobbin will tuck herself under the covers right up against me. I have to prop the pillows to prevent rolling over, but that tiny 2.2 oz bird can generate so much heat it's like a sweat box! It the whole time, she'll be chirping away and grinding her beak (happy bird sound), by the time Jack comes to rescue me, she is soaked with sweat, as am I.
The problem with Bobbin is that she bites, and bites hard. I've got the scars to prove it. She's moody, can be happy as can be one minute and trying to dismember something the next. No rhyme or reason to it. We love her to death. We show no fear when approaching her, we do not want her to know she scares the crap out of us, just kidding, we're used to her bites.
I make all of her toys. Nothing store bought for Bobbin. She has two large cages, one for the main level of our home so she can be around us all day, and one upstairs for her to sleep.
She won't eat breakfast with us, so she gets cage service. Jack bite little pieces of his fruit and cheerios off and puts them in her treat dish. Happy bird sounds galore! Her favorite fruit is banana, but only if she can bite from the whole banana.
Oh she does have one very special talent. She mimmicks my laugh perfectly. When I laugh, Bobbin goes into hysterics!
She also does something else we find humorous. Sometimes when we are watching TV, Bobbin does what we call her jail bird routine. You know that sound inmates make when they slide their mugs against the bars? Bobbin does that with her beak and you'd swear there were more than one of her doing it. It sounds like you walked into the local jail during some protest.
She is also quite the model as you will see if my pictures load.
