Confused!

Surgery was Monday - weight was 205. Came home yesterday and the scale said 219! Is this a result of all the fluids they gave because my bp kept crashing?

You are very well hydrated due to the IV's they give you to make sure you do not become dehydrated post surgery.
It is designed to keep you ahead of the game while your learning to drink with your new belly...
Be patient it will get better...

A bit rocky. I can't decide which is more uncomfortable - my abdomen or my shoulder. Drinking doesn't seem to be a problem so far, but the walking is harder

The water weight will come off.

Right now, you must rest and walk a little but don't push yourself. The BP crashing had to have been a concern. Did they tell you why it was happening?

You say shoulder pain? I remember shoulder pain as well. It was excess gas up there that had to get out. It was very painful.

Use your pain meds. Check your BP regularly especially since you did have an issue.

The water weight will come off and quickly.

Rest, follow the guidelines which are designed to allow healing take place. Don't push it.

My BP was probably to do with a combination of my heart meds and the blood thinners they give to guard against clots.

I understand.

I am on Bystolic, which controls the heart rate and protects me against tacacardia.

I was also on a bunch of bp meds.

Here is something for you to look forward to: I am off all of my meds! I no longer take BP meds. I no longer take diuretic (Lasix ). I no longer take diabetic meds. I no longer require the 90 units of fast insulin (novolog) that I needed to control my blood sugars.

So far it looks like I can enjoy a cup of decaf coffee without getting mild tacacardia too.

I did go home on only two med. one diabetic and one heart med. the doctor thinks I will drop the diabetics drug within 3 months. The heart med I will be on forever, but it's better than 7 meds each day.

The operation pays for itself

You know with all the money saved on Rx's this operation actual pays for itself in so many ways.

The weight gain was from the IV's. I stepped on the scale when I got home and almost threw it out the window. I gained 15 pounds in three days, no one warned me about the fluid retention during my stay. It was the folks on this board that filled me in. May I make a suggestion, try to weigh only once a week and when you do weigh in, measure yourself at the same time. You are going to run into stalls, especially when you begin exercising more than you have in the past. You will begin to build muscle mass and per volume, muscle weighs more than fat. So when you hit that stall and you will, you may still be losing inches and that is just as important as losing weight. I discovered this trick during a six week stall, after I started at the gym. No weight loss, but I finally realized that I'd lost almost six inches in my waist. Since then I measure when I weigh in.

Frank an excellent point. I have seen you state this a couple of times and it is definitely worth mentioning a few times.

I have told people weight is only one measurement. There are the tape measures around waist (belly button position) and neck. I put on a dress shirt the other day and boy was there a lot of room around my neck. Before the operation I could barely button the collar.

I have to think about getting back to the gym. For now, I like to take my dogs for a walk. I have hilly terrain here so the walk is good exercise and the heart rate does get up at the hills, but no it isn't aerobic for long period of times. I got burned out at the gym a few years back.
