Desperately seeking

Hi! I'm Paula, 15 yrs out from RNY. I did the usual - lost 150#, gained it back, lost it again - all the while dealing with fluctuating blood pressures, severe anemia, nausea and diarrhea. About two years ago, my system was showing signs of organ failure and I went to see my bariatric surgeon who just wanted to give me more of his supplements. A friend referred me to a functional medicine specialist, who has been amazing. Testing revealed I was going into organ failure and her fast action stopped that process and I began to improve. We noticed, though, that my body was not digesting food and I was losing weight at a quicker rate that she would have expected. She referred me back to the bariatric surgeon who did an endoscopy and MRI with contrast which revealed areas of herniation (3) and dying tissue in the small intestine. He did surgery mid June 2019 with 'promise' I would only be on liquid again for about 2 weeks, then soft food for two weeks, then back to normal. 10 weeks later, I am still on liquids and soft foods, still losing weight, still getting nutrient infusions as I can't take the larger vitamins. A swallow study this week revealed another hernia, the size of a tennis ball at the top of pouch, and two strictures in my esophagus which are preventing the esophagus from emptying correctly. 3 month weight to see the GI doc - not going back to the surgeon!
Have any of you seen, heard of, or experienced this? I am hearing some rumblings in my area (MI) that this is more common than reported. What treatments have been used or recommended? Thanks for your input.

Paula, I've been trying to think of something to say, but words fail me. I want to ask you how you knew you were going into organ failure, and which organ was failing?. I know that with people that have been in my life multiple organ failure failure is the thing that happens just before death.

You are moving along with plans to have the surgery but is your pouch still intact? It sounds like a very complicated and serious surgery. I'm guessing you're going to be in the hospital for more than a week.

I've been here about six months and I've heard a lot of members talk about hernias and stoma and strictures, but I have never heard of a combination like yours. And the problems they have been shared seem much less serious than what you're going through.

Are you attributing your current problems to the surgery that you had 15 years ago? I have a hard time believing they are related to bariatric surgery, especially since you have had an array of health problems including gaining all the weight back and then losing it again and then gaining again. Your body has been through hell.

I had the surgery 12 years ago and I do not have any of the problems you listed. Plus, I did not gain any of the weight back. I have kept up with my eating plan but I eat anything I want to including bread, pasta and the occasional pastry. My bariatric surgery turned me into a normal person, if you know what that means. It's hard to Define normal but when I say it I mean someone who isn't a prisoner of their body and isn't obese.

I am by no means challenging your perceptions. But I find it really hard to imagine bariatric surgery had anything to do with your complex physical problems. Unless the Doctor Who did the surgery made a mistake that led to this General deterioration of your health, I would caution you to explore everywhere. Look at every sort of condition or disease that can cause the problems you're having. If you had bariatric surgery again in June, why didn't the surgeon also deal with various problems you had? Some of the people here have had hernia surgery at the same time as they had their gastric bypass or Vertical Sleeve.

Whatever the cause, it's obvious you need to have multiple surgeries and Death to Your bowel is terrifying to me. What is causing that? I've never heard of that being a side effect of bariatric surgery, even from the surgery detractors.

I say this to everyone who gains all their weight back, so please don't be offended. Why and how did you do it? The fact that you went in for this really difficult surgery, and then just ate yourself back to your old self is indicative of something that is wrong in your head. You have an eating disorder. And your eating disorder is driving your bus. How is that going to be any different this time?

You really need to get a therapist, if you don't have one already. You need to be very honest with the therapist about what you are doing relating to food. Somewhere in your mind there is a little voice and it is talking to you and it is telling the truth. You can block it out and you can pretend it doesn't exist and you can refuse to share what your eating disorder tells you with your given therapist. But if you get a therapist and agree to be honest, you are going to be light years ahead of where you were the first time.

Your complicated array of health problems worries me greatly.

Here's a story written by one of our members. Read it and tell me it doesn't horrify you. Your story is the first one I have read that even comes close to the Nicole story.

Hello Paula, I'm Maggie. I'm 13 years post surgery and you sound like you are having a lot of similar issues to me. I also gained weight back after surgery but suddenly began losing weight in 2014 and lost the weight faster than right after surgery. Since 2014 I've known I have motility disorder of some kind, I didn't have the insurance or support in my life to seek out specialists far away that can diagnose me. I was told in August 2018 that I was having severe hypoglycemia, but that I'm still non-diabetic. I've been struggling to maintain weight close to 150, but my goal weight is 175 (I feel healthy and love how my body looks at 175). I'm working on a diagnosis for my motility disorder, but that's a long time away. In the meantime, I'm battling both malnourishment and post surgery hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia. I'd love to chat with you to compare post surgery complications. I feel very isolated most of the time because of my health issues.
