Dumping Syndrome

Hello all,

I am about to have my surgery in November. I am some what nervous about the topic of dumping. I will have a month off after surgery before I return back to work offshore as long as all has healed properly. My concern is experiencing dumping syndrome while at work. I work 12 hours a day and will have to sip water all day. But I will be able to follow the diet plan because they have many different types of food out here. If I were to experience a dump am I going to be able to maintain at work. What if i cant lay down only sit? Will I be able to avoid this while offshore just by following the diet? I have heard so many different things about dumping syndrome. Can anyone please advise on this issue.

Hi,

As time goes by you will learn what sets the dumping syndrome off. I had my surgery (RYN) in 2/2010 and at first I stayed away from anything that I thought would trigger it. As time has past those things that caused the dumping don't bother me as much. Eat your food slowly and small amounts. Stay away from those items which you have been told will trigger it. There is a reason why people are telling you this. As for the feeling of the dumping. You will know when it hits you the feeling of having to throw up will hit you. I throw up and it is over I don't have any after feelings. I did have a case in which it took a while for it to hit me. The feeling started and then about an hour later I finally threw up. Then I had a case in which I had raw sugar on a piece of ham and was instantly sick. So staying away from those items is important. Hi Tischler, Welcome. Ireed is right, if you follow what you know you can eat, eat slowly and chew your food well you should have no problems, pasta is usaually a trigger food for dumping as well as surgary items so stay away from those, you can test out different foods on your days off while back on land. Thank you all for the replies. I don't even want to take a chance of this happening while I'm offshore working so sticking to my diet will be number 1. Was just more concerned of if the dumping occurred whether or not it would effect me from working or not. But if I have a little time off before going back to work, like you said hopefully I will already know what things cause this and don't. The other factor I was worried about was being able to stay hydrated through out the day if I'm working out in the heat. Hopefully by getting the surgery closer to the winter time will help with this factor.
 
Hi I had RNY bypass 8/7/2012, almost 1 month. I went back to work after 12 days with no problems. This past week I experienced "dumping". I ate a little too fast and didn't chew well enough. I didn't take but a few minutes I felt the urge to vomit and I did. I immediately felt better. The next episode, I had a WW fudgecicle unfortunately it was not sugar free. That took about an hour and I had cramping with the runs. I was afraid to stray too far from the bathroom. Make sure to chew your food and watch out for sugar. It is worth it, I saw my surgeon yesterday, in less than a month I had lost 26 pounds. Good luck with your surgery, you have a healthy life ahead of you.

CONGRATULATIONS on your upcoming wls!

You are wise to be concerned about hydration while working in the heat. My suggestion would be to find some way to carry a water bottle with you at all times. There are gizmos and gadgets galore, straps to sling across the shoulder, velcro straps to attach to your leg, etc. You could get really carried away and go for a bladder that secures to the body, with a tube running up to your mouth! LOL Whatever works.

When you have a chance, do some Internet searching. In particular, check out bicycling and hiking/mountaineering sites, among others. You'll find lots of interesting stuff.

Also, there are some electrolyte replacement drinks or water additives (like Sqwincher) that will help. Be sure to check with your dr/nutritionist first.
