Eating once released to soft foods

I am entering my 3rd week PostOp and I am concerned because when I drink my liquids I don't have any problems unless I drink too closely to my previous sip or take too big of gulps. What if when I go to eat, once released, I over eat what they suggest? I have so many nerves about the next step.

What problems do you have when you drink again too soon or take gulps that are too big? Because the same things will happen if you eat too much. The difference is it's faster because it's more dense. It will be pretty important to remember no drinking 30 minutes before or after food. Also, start out with a few tablespoons and work your way up to whatever serving size was suggested to you for soft foods. My program suggested 1/4 to 1/2 cup but I started out with 2 tablespoons for every new food, just in case it was too heavy for me.

If I drink too close to each other (sips) or take too big of gulps I get that gas pain you might have had before surgery if when swallowing something and it felt like it went down the wrong pipe. Thats the best way to describe it.
I will pay attention to my new tummy! Thanks for the advice!

Measure, measure, measure! At least in the beginning. Start with tablespoons of food. Eat slowly and wait. You can always go back for more, but when you eat too much it’s too late.
I was able to start adding egg drop soup into my diet last Wednesday and there was one day where I had the full 1 ounce cup and, literally, 20 minutes later my stomach had that "too full" feeling. I learned! I drank too fast and got overly confident

You'll definity know it if you eat too much, and it will likely feel uncomfortable for a while. I had a couple of intense experiences, one ended with vomiting, the other I had to just walk it off for about 45 minutes before I felt somewhat normal. It can be quite uncomfortable and induce a little panic because it doesn't feel like it's going to go away, but it does. It might feel like you should drink to get things to move, but that can make things worse sometimes. Little by little and stopping before you physically feel full are keys to avoiding issues.

Eat very slowly. Don't eat until you "feel" full, at that point, it's probably too much. I don't remember if you got VSG or bypass, but either visualize what the actual size of your stomach/pouch is and don't eat any more than that, and/or be sure to measure to ensure you don't go overboard. Eating very slowly will help your brain recognize you are satiated and help you recognize when you should be done.

There is a learning curve. You'll probably make a mistake here or there, but you'll also learn from them pretty quickly.

Take everything slow, even if it feels like you can do more....always wait before having more.

Thank you SO much for your advice. I had sleeve surgery on 2/23 and feel I have been doing pretty well since then. The only time is like I explained with the random big sips or too frequent of sips.
I appreciate all your advice!!

I was crampy for months everytime I ate. Slowing down and listening to body cues can help. Measure to start. I never threw up but a couple times I had intense pain to almost tears when something didn't agree or I ate too fast. You will only do it once or twice before you learn what not to do.

With water you might be taking in too much air causing pains. That said it took me 3 months to get back to 48-60 oz range cause I also had issues with that.

I just took my time and focused on the fact that it would eventually get better.

I am currently 3 weeks post op... csn I start having chicken and veggies ? Obviously shredded or puréed .... I’m nervous to reintroduce and the foods they suggest on puréed is rather just keep doing water and protein water. I’m burned out of soups... I can’t tolerate eggs and mashed potatoes makes me gag now....

You really need to follow the guidelines from your surgeons office when it comes to dietary. I stayed on the liquid for an extra week with the permission of my doctor because my husband was going to be out of town when I transitioned to the next phase. He understood my concerns for transitioning, but I wouldn’t have done it without clearance.

You can definitely do pureed veggies carefully. Some of them can cause gas, so be prepared for that. What were their guidelines on introducing meat and fish?

Some foods will work better than others. I used to love sweet potatoes, but early on I vomited them up and I haven't tried them since. It's probably mental at this point, but I'm in no hurry to have them again any time soon. Same with fish, unfortunately. That was the first meat I was allowed, so I ate a lot of it, and since I was able to introduce other meats I haven't had fish even once. On the other hand, I have eggs almost every day for breakfast and look forward to them, so just listen to your body. Listen to your support team also, of course, but if something doesn't feel right, don't eat it even if it's on the allowed list. If you feel like eating the same thing every day and it's good for you, then eat it every day. Right now it's all about keeping your body fed while your stomach heals and adapts to the changes.

I like the way you said “ if you feel like eating the same food everyday “ this is me right now.
