Just got home from the hospital this afternoon and I’m experiencing EXTREME fatigue. I wake up from a nap, I walk around the house for a while and then the next I know.... my eyelids are heavy and I just can’t keep them open! I didn’t feel like this last night or this morning in the hospital... just wondering if this is normal. Also, my eyesight is a bit wonky.

Yes, that is normal. The anesthesia takes a while to get out of your system. I would fall asleep at the drop of a hat. Also your body knows it needs rest to heal. Don't fight it, allow yourself those naps.

The first few weeks can have some ups and downs, but things even out for most people in a month or so, sometimes sooner, sometimes later. Rest up, in between walks and such. :)

Drugs, anesthesia, and major surgery adds. I wasn't so much tired as I was extremely weak. But I'm still sleeping a solid 9-10 hours a night since surgery. My body must need it.

Trust and listen to your body

Thank you all! I’ve never experienced such sleepiness! I physically can’t keep my eyes open for long. I’ve been waking up every few hours to walk around the house. And the gas pains.... OMG! I wouldn’t wish them on my worst enemy! Thanks again for putting me at ease!

I’d say that lasted about a month for me but keep in mind that everyone is different. I also had my gallbladder out at the same time as my bypass, so my body was going through some extra healing. It’ll subside, but our bodies have been through some major stuff.

I know it's been a few weeks and hopefully you're feeling better now, but I figured I'd chime in for anyone else who stumbles on this thread. One of the things to remember in the first few weeks, in addition to the anesthesia and general recovery sapping your strength, is the fact that you are only consuming a few hundred calories per day. For most of us that is way below what our bodies are used to. As you gradually add back more substantial food you will start to feel more energetic. I was still very fatigued when I went back to work three weeks after my surgery, but gradually I felt better. Give it time and you'll be feeling great!

Thank you for reaching out! I’m feeling SO much better! I’m 4 weeks out from surgery today. And I think you are right - I’m on soft foods (600-800 cals) and I definitely have more energy now. I’m sleeping really good at night and I’m no longer sleepy throughout the day. So glad I’m past the extreme fatigue & purée stage!!!

Sounds like your body is still trying to get the anethesia out of your system. Don't be afraid to take naps it will pass in a couple of days to a week. Also like someone else mentioned you are taking in way less calories now so your body is adjusting to the drastic changes. Give it time. Good Luck!
