Fed Up!

Fed up with too many years of yo-yo dieting and weight control!
Had my initial consult for Bypass this week. Completed EKG, Lab,& Chest Xray.
Scheduled for virtual Psych Eval next week along with a Home Sleep study (Sleep Apnea eval).
Also have 3 visits with the Nutritionist scheduled and Doc said I should be ready to go for a December surgery IF all the test/evals come back ok.

I am pretty excited needless to say! Now I just have to learn how to “puree” food. I always thought it was just Gerber’s baby food.

Hi! We are in a similar place, but I started everything in June... upper endoscopy, pulmonologist (I'm now on a CPAP) blood work, radiology, nutritionist, psych eval... and I'm hoping to be done prescreening mid Nov and get surgery of xmas holidays. It's a lot of prescreening to get through... I just want to get going on this! After years of yo-yo and going higher everytime, and now after the pandemic lockdown I just ballooned up! Now I'm super uncomfortable. I avoid walking the dog because my legs make it hard to walk and my back hurts. I get out of breath going up one flight of stairs... I can't wait to feel better!

Understands, diet is bad four letter word. It is mainly because after you reach your goal you say I am all better then go back to the bad habits from before the diet. This is a way to make you look at food differently. It is not AA it is something that is necessary. You can’t just quit food. It doesn’t work that way. Be fun stay safe choose happy.

I have my home sleep test tomorrow night and am somewhat worried about that. I do snore, always have, and the Doc said if the test comes back Moderate or better, we can proceed, but IF the sleep test comes back with an AHI of 30+, then I have to use the CPAP for 8 weeks. But he said the real problem is trying to get a CPAP without a long wait time. That would push the surgery back which right now is the really the only X Factor in my timeline equation.

I here ya about the legs hurting, my dog is pissed at me for no recent walks. I had a total left knee replacement last year and am anxious to get this new Titanium joint on the road! First, want to lessen the weight on it before putting it through the paces. :D

Hopefully surgery will be around Christmas and we can compare notes. Good luck on your journey

Congrats!! You know that saying "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels"? Turns out that's true lol I always responded with "maybe but no salad tastes as good as a cookie." But, I feel pretty fantastic!! And, I eat freshly baked cookies at Xmas. So,win win lol

Also, Puree usually lasts only one week and there are many foods that are naturally of a pureed texture. Soft scrambled eggs, refried beans, cottage cheese, hummus etc. So don't stress about that. And it usually only lasts a week anyway!!

Good to know. I was thinking I had to go out and buy one of those Ninja do-everything processors.
Soft scrambled eggs, refried beans, cottage cheese, hummus? Heck, I did'nt realize I been Puree for a longtime already!

Passed my virtual Psych Eval this afternoon with flying colors.
Now getting wired up for my home sleep study tonight. Just hope this thing does'nt shock me in the middle of the night!

Thanks.

I was also nervous about the sleep test and CPAP shortage. I feel lucky on my fronts. I had an in office sleep test and they were able to do a split night... meaning that when I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom she said I had severe apnea (99 events/hour) and qualified to go on the CPAP for the 2nd half of the night... they control it remotely and were able to increase pressure as I slept to find my ideal pressure... then I just had to wait for the unit to arrive... but it didn't take too long... the first 2 weeks were challenging, but I stuck it out, (the mask leaked at the set pressure and sometimes I felt claustrophobic with the full face mask and the hot weather... I went back to the office for a mask re-fit and adjustment of pressure and now things are good, and I have an average of less than 1 event per hour!

I think it is great that we are on a similar time line. Are you doing sleeve or bypass? I'm leaning toward sleeve.

I will be having the Bypass. I was leaning that way but my Sugeon also recommends it. He pointed out the Sleeve's lack of long term data and in his opinion favored the Bypass. Maybe he was just tailoring his decision based on my particular situation, but I'm happy with the choice.

How long do you have to continue to use the CPAP? Did your surgeon specify a time requirement with the CPAP before surgery? I will have to wait a couple of weeks before my results come back for my Sleep test last night.

Still hoping for a December sugery date. :)

Someone (either my insurance, my pulmonologist, or my bariatric surgeon... not sure which) requires 30 days. Then I go to my Pulmonologist for a checkup and he will sign the pre-auth papers.

Your doctor sounds easy to work with. I can't tell you how many appointments I've had up until now (very many) but I started the process in January. Every clearance turned into 3 more appointments, none of which are easy to schedule. I had a sleep study done at the hospital and was diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea. My physician and insurance require 30 days of compliance. After that, a follow-up is scheduled, and hopefully I will get my clearance. I waited 2 months for the machine to arrive, and just hooked it up last night.

Yes the Doctor is good, but what is really nice is all of the other requirments are done within the same Hospital/Bariatric Center (except the virtual Pysch eval, although they scheduled). During my inital appointment (which took 2 months to get), they also assigned me a "Navigator" to schedule and assist me. The Nagviatgtor provided me a specific to-do list with a timeline of 3 months. Of course IF any issues arose from my lab, pysch eval, or other tests, then that could put a delay in the process. So far so good.

My only concern now is the sleep test which my results will not be back for a couple of weeks. The Doc did tell me that if I need a CPAP for month, there is a problem with the supply chain just like you experienced. So that is the only real issue that might delay my surgery.

I know with such a short timeframe I have a lot of work to to do to prepare with my eating habits which I am working on. My eating issues were only clearing the plate and eating too fast. Correcting those are doable.

Here is hoping you get that clearance real soon! When do you thing you might have the surgery?

I needed a cpap and got it pretty quickly just because the hospital is linked in with the service. My problem was using it. - First a mask issue which required them sending me a new one, then the machine kept telling me it wasn't working. I talked to someone who worked on them and got it straightened out. There should be a cpap forum to solve all the little problems!
I'm excited for you. I just got my date of 10/25 and I'm thrilled and nervous. I can't imagine not wanting to finish a meal! I can haardly wait!

I had some challenges using it at first too. It was August and hot as blazes. Even with the AC on in the house, upstairs in the bedroom was still over 75 degrees and I felt claustrophobic and panicky! It felt like I was in a steamy bathroom and it felt like I couldn't catch my breath. I checked the automatic heat setting which was 80 degrees! (to match the room I guess). I turned down the temp on the heated air, and the humidity level... (Also, I'm having a lot of hot flashes and the full face mask was making me so hot!) Also, the pressure was really high (17) and the leaking would wake me up... I set it to ramp up over 45 minutes, but every 45 minutes I would wake up, turn it off and start again to ramp back up for another 45... because of course I can't change the pressure setting. Some nights I would sit in front of the TV holding the mask tight to my face to avoid the leakage. I did all these ridiculous things, which clearly are not consistent with the reason for having a CPAP, because I HAD to make sure I used it at least 4 hours a night for it to "count". It took some time to get another appointment, but once there, they tried a bunch of different brands and sizes of mask, but the first one was still best. I convinced them to turn down the pressure, (13) and everything has been smooth sailing since then. Much less leakage, consistently fewer than 1 apnea per hour... and now I'm actually sleeping at night, but it was a challenge for a while. I'm now done my first 30 days and I go back to my pulmonologist next week to get sign off for surgery... That will be one more hurdle completed!

You can also eat baby food that's pureed and it comes in small portions too!

Thank you. I'm hoping to have the sleep clearance by the end of October, and not sure how long out surgery will be be, but I am guessing end of December.

My sleep study was completed with a result of a "mild" sleep apnea. No requirement for a CPAP, So another hurdle completed!

2-3 more dietician visits, an EGD, and then a pre-surgical appointment with the Doc and away we go!
Going to be the best Xmas ever.
Yay it's getting closer. My pcp told me I likely would have my sleep apnea "cured" after WLS. She has ordered another one for me just to be safe, but hopefully I no longer need the equipment that I've never bothered using.

"never bothered using", now that is funny. Hopefully your surgery will be soon.
My official sleep study stated my mild sleep apnea will be resolved with weight loss which I suspected.
Now my Bariatric Center is talking a Novemeber surgery. Timeline is moving really fast!
