Finally hit the protein shake wall

2 months post op, after the 2 week liquid diet and I suddenly have nausea and feeling way too heavy in my stomach when I drink protein shakes now. I was fairly low on protein this evening so I made magic milk with fairlife milk and lactose free skim milk powder, with sugar free cocoa powder. It was too thick and sweet but it felt better in my stomach then the protein shakes. I first saw the link to magic milk on this site and it's going to be super helpful for me, so thank you! @dianeseattle

2 months post op is a great time to start weaning yourself off protein shakes. You can get the majority of your protein from actual food. Greek Yogurt and cottage cheese have quite a bit of protein and are still fairly easy to digest, even a few months out. I started adding a scoop of protein powder to a box of sugar free pudding. So, an extra 30 grams in 4 servings instead of at once but, pudding is better than protein shakes lol

If you still need the protein shakes, or magic milk, add fruits, extracts, or herbs to tone down the sweetness.

I hate the commercial protein shakes. After your liquid diet, isn't there a soft/pureed food stage? I think that's what I did after surgery. You can eat any food that can be pureed into a thick liquid, or something like that. It really helped me because I could eat stuff like sweet potatoes with butter and/or maple syrup, but also meats that can be pureed.

One of the best things I ever made in the puree phase was turkey, cranberry sauce, gravy mix, Magic Milk and instant mashed potato flakes, made into a thick liquid by using a stick blender. This was my holiday dinner after I'd had surgery in August. You can make all kinds of variations using whatever proteins and liquids you like.

If I hadn't been able to do this, I don't know what I would have done, since, as I mentioned, I HATE protein shakes.

However, I did also find vanilla and chocolate protein powder at Trader Joe's and this allowed me to make really delicious protein shakes with Magic Milk and stuff like applesauce. I did a lot of experimenting. But I was never wildly restricted like some people are more recently, since the bariatric protocol has gotten so popular and so many commercial ventures have entered into it.

Again, it's really important to ask a medical professional like a nutritionist to help you along.
