Gastric sleeve and iBS-C

Seriously considering gastric sleeve surgery, need to lose 65-75 pounds. In the last few months I’ve developed IBS-C. Will the surgery help with IBS? I’ve heard it can. I really appreciate any info or encouragement. I’m 65, in good health but don’t want my weight to effect my health in the future. Thanks

Welcome! I can’t say if it’ll help with IBS-C because I do not have it. I think exploring surgery is a great idea. Have you done a seminar for bariatric surgery? I don’t think my area is doing live seminars, but there are virtual seminars. I wish you luck on deciding which path to take! We all have different experiences and are at different stages, but we’re all pretty open about our journeys, so feel free to ask any other questions that come to mind.

From what I've read, there is a significant overlap between IBS and obesity, and a reasonably high percentage of patients who get the sleeve or bypass (particularly the sleeve) see positive results. If the bariatric clinic you are interested in is offering any sort of seminar, virtual or in person, I would recommend attending that and asking them about IBS to get an answer from the source.

A recent study from 2017 included both laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and RYGB patients before and after surgery. One hundred eighty-six patients were assessed using a GI quality of life index (GIQLI). Total GIQLI score and all sub-scores were significantly improved within 24 months after surgery, and these findings were more robust for those patients who underwent LSG. Possible sex influence on symptoms was analyzed and no difference was found in total GIQLI between male and female patients. These studies consistently show that bariatric surgery is effective in reversing functional GI symptoms.

That being said, most studies I've seen state that more research is necessary to definitively state that bariatric surgery will reverse IBS, but it certainly looks promising. It's definitely a question you should ask a bariatric medical provider and/or surgeon.

I have IBS-C and have for years. I was hopeful that the surgery (I had the bypass) would solve or at least improve the situation. That has not been the case. It did not make it worse, but it has not improved the situation. That being said, it was still 100% worth it. I feel so much better and it DID fix a lot of other issues that I had. Also, I am only 4 months post op. So, maybe as I get further along and can add more foods/fiber things will improve? Who knows. But even if they do not, I still feel so much better in so many other ways.
