General worries

Hi all! New here. I’m on pre-op liquid diet but no date for surgery yet. I have to have a hernia repaired next week and then hopefully get a Surgery date! I’m young and just extremely nervous about this whole thing. I come from a big family where FOOD is a social thing. That Good ole southern cookin’. I’m doing very well with liquids right now and avoiding meals when they are being prepared. I’m very worried that after surgery I will “relapse” back into old eating habits. I just have general worries and need some reassurance!

Welcome! I know what you’re talking about with that good Ole Southern cookin’! My moms from Shreveport, La, and she taught me a few of the southern essentials. I make amazing fried chicken LOL And I look at it this way. Eating like that won’t help me achieve my health goals. Will I never eat fried chicken again? Heck no! Will it be a long time, and maybe even a modified version? Yes. Personally, I love food! But when I was talking with the weight loss counselor last week, I altered that to, I like food, but I love flavor! Anything can be made flavorful while still being healthy. It’s all a matter of trying new recipes and discovering new styles of cooking. You might even make some things that your family will love and want you to make more often!

Thank you for replying! I’m from South GA and every side is Fried and a “veggie” and of course everything is smothered in gravy!! I love cooking and trying new recipes and am Always excited to try new things. I’m having to challenge my perception and family’s idea of what “healthy” is and isn’t.

I think challenging perceptions is an awesome goal! Start small, so you don’t overwhelm yourself. One of my favorite summer dishes is fried zucchini. We grow a lot of zucchini in our garden. I got an air fryer last year, but before that I used my oven. So I’ve switch from frying to baking. My next step is to, instead of bread crumbs or flour, I’m going to try pulsing pork rinds to use as the crisp, and just sprinkle the sliced zuc with the pork rinds. Other members have made “fried” mozzarella sticks with this method. I’m excited to try them!

We have a garden and grow many vegetables but they always end up fried!! I love sautéed zucchini and onions but the air fryer is a good idea! I recently invested in one and need plenty of recipes to try. When I’m able to I want to try those mozzarella sticks!
