Hair Loss Question

I think I started losing it around 3 months and it’s just starting to bounce back now at a year out. My surgeon was okay with me taking Biotin right away, I actually took it prior to surgery due to thin hair. I started using Routine shampoo/conditioner in May which I think helped. Or, most likely, my body has finally adjusted to the major weight loss. I just cut my hair short and had some layers put in to bounce it up a bit. It’s definitely a difficult part of the process.

Hair loss post-sleeve surgery is common due to stress and rapid weight loss. Typically occurring 3-6 months after surgery, it's known as telogen effluvium. Reassuringly, it's temporary. To support hair regrowth, ensure adequate nutrition, including biotin supplements. Gentle hair care is crucial, using biotin shampoo and avoiding harsh chemicals. Handle hair delicately to minimize breakage, and stay hydrated for overall health. Managing stress is also beneficial. If concerned, consult healthcare providers for personalized advice. Though frustrating, with patience and proper care, your hair should regain its thickness over time.

Hi All,
I am 3.5 months out from sleeve surgery. My hair has been falling out in huge clumps when I wash it or brush it. Otherwise I am also shedding hair like crazy all over the place. I know it's normal after surgery but I am just curious how many months people experienced this hair loss for after surgery. I am losing a lot of hair but I am blessed with thick long hair so it's only noticeable to me (but the shedding all the time is driving me a little nuts!!) My poor vacuum is working overtime....

Thanks for any insight,
Maryann
I had gastric bypass 5 months ago and started hair loss. My surgeon told me it's normal and will eventually just stop.

For those whose hair does not recover fully on its own FUE hair transplant Turkey is worth considering as a permanent solution. This is completely normal and is called telogen effluvium. It usually peaks around 3 to 4 months post surgery and most people see it slow down and stop between months 4 to 6. Since you have thick hair naturally you are in a good position and regrowth should come in nicely once shedding stops. Make sure you are hitting your protein goals daily as that is the biggest factor in hair recovery after sleeve surgery. Stay consistent with your vitamins especially biotin and iron. Hang in there it does get better.
