Hair loss

I had by pass. I am 3 1/2 months out I am starting hair loss right now. I am not happy but knew it was going to happen. I think if I can walk around town fat I can walk around with less hair Hahaha.

I do take biotin every day as of yet I do not know if this will help or not but may as well try.

I am also going to say this is something that I thought about more before I had surgery than after. I am under 200 lbs for the first time in 26 years so I have so many good things, hair I don't care that much about anymore.

Not yet now this is kind of making me concerned. LOL I can put my hair in a pony tail so I hope that will cover if need be. I have just started to get a lot of hair out in my bed on my hair brush. I did have this also after I had COVID lost a lot of hair, but no bald spots.

All I can do now is hope and remember all the thing I can do and the more I am doing in life so the hair is not that big of a deal ( I hope I still feel this way as more hair comes out)

I had the bypass, but I’m not sure if the type of surgery matters. Hair loss pretty much always happens, but as long as you’re getting your required protein or more than it’s not going to be horrible. It’ll look like a lot at the time, but it does stop and grow back. Some people preemptively cut their hair, some wait until the shedding begins. I did a major chop, but that was more because I wanted to. It can be nerve wracking, but that’s pretty normal.

I had surgery last June and lost a pretty good amount of hair but the good news is, it is growing back. I'd much rather lose the hair and lose the weight than not lose the weight at all because I was afraid of hair loss.

There's lots of different things you can do to make your hair look better through the hair loss period, so don't be obsessed about it. You can type hair loss in the search area of this website and you'll come up with a bunch of discussions on it.

Keep up with your protein and ask your doctor if you can take Biotin as a supplement. However, if you have your thyroid levels checked regularly, make sure your doc that orders the test knowa that you take Biotin as it can alter the results on the thyroid. It isn't exactly bad for your thyroid but skews the results of the tests. So what I do is hold off Biotin for a few days before my labs are drawn. But as always, check with your doctor.

I am 5 months out from RNY and have had hair fall for about a month now. My nutritionist said I could take biotin and to keep my protein up. You could ask your nutritionist what they suggest. I am lucky that I have thick long hair to start with but it’s comes out when I wash it, when I comb it, when I dry it, when i style it! I do find it hard to believe I still have hair on my head...but I am the only one who really knows how much falls out each day - my husband said it doesn’t look different (he is both kind, and fairly unobservant about those things lol). I actually have an appointment to get it cut this week, simply to make it feel healthier and fuller.

You look great with a short haircut! I still haven't cut my hair since surgery and I've been just putting it up in a bun or a pony tail because it is cool for the summer. My profile picture was taken wearing my wig, now it is below my shoulders.

My last hairstyle was a bob but without the bangs but for most of my adult life I wore it short. I'm thinking of getting it cut this fall now that a lot of the shorter strands of regrowth is a bit longer. I'm considering cutting it quite short but then remember how long it took me to grow it out to a bob and then I chicken out! LOL!

I have only had short hair a couple of times. My hair is fairly thick, but has been thinning out over the years. I have had some hair loss but it hasn’t showed to anyone but the hairbrush and me. My hair is down below the bra line. I do wear it in pony tail with scrunches a lot.

So since I last responded to this thread I have been to the salon - I was nervous and a bit embarrassed about my hair falling out like crazy but I told the stylist I had surgery in the spring and needed a good healthy cut to restore some volume. She was SO sweet and acted like it was no big deal - my hair was pretty long and she cut several inches and it’s made a huge difference. It’s still below my shoulders but looks much better - it’s thinning around my temples but if I wear it down you can’t tell too much!
