Hi. I am new to this group and am very concerned about not having lost even 1 ounce in 6 days. I have tried to eat less, I am watching my calorie intake and nutrtional intake but nothing has made the scale move even 1 ounce. I'm extremely frustrated and baffled. What am I doing wrong? What could be causing this to happen? Can anyone help me understand what's going with my body?

Hi Renee, practically everyone shares this experience when such a profound bodily change takes place. It's commonly called "starvation response," but it has more technical names as well, like "adaptive thermogenesis." Even more simply, it's called a "stall." It happened to me and lasted for MONTHS. I had lost so much weight by then, I looked much better, but it still really freaked me out.

There's not a lot you can do to break a stall, but one thing I found that worked for me was drastically changing the amount I ate and activity I spent every day. I would literally ADD an extra meal, or shift my portion size from small to large--anything to alarm my metabolism so it would kick into overdrive.

Mostly, I'd just advise you to relax and let it happen. You already know you're doing the right thing. Give your body a chance to catch up.

Welcome to the group, I hope you'll search through the thousands of posts that are stored here, using the search feature up in the corner. Everything will be all right. Part of an eating disorder is your "fat brain" trying to convince you you're going to fail. Don't listen to the negative.

Hi,
I had surgery March 2024, the first couple of weeks were hell, it gets better but at times it can feel worse psychologically than being fat. I was 400lbs plus, I now way 229lbs and all my physical problems from being fat are mostly gone. The first few days I couldn't even drink an ounce of water to begin with, so the surgery really does force you into calorie restriction, and like it's been said here, your body reacts negatively at first to letting go of weight but within a month you' ll notice a difference. Over the next year if you eat right and exercise your body will become a calorie burning furnace. I eat probably over 2000 calories a day but look like an NFL linebacker, but like I said it's not without it's issues. I've lost the savory taste of food, meaning a good steak taste the same as a crappy steak. I used to be a big "Foodie" and now I'm still psychologically a big O'fat boy in my head. Counseling is important, preferably with a professional but things like this also help. It's very much like AA type programs, we are all going through similar issues due to surgery just at different stages. Hang in there and trust the process. Don't be afraid to ask your doctor ANYTHING your body has been changed surgically so some stuff definitely will feel different physically, emotionally, and mentally. Good luck.
