Hi, I am new to the group and I am scheduled for gastric bypass surgery on 9/10/12. I have about 65 pounds to lose and I have been a diabetic for 15 years. I am a 63 year old female who would like to be healthier and stick around for a while to see my four grand kids grow up. I am very nervous about the surgery and could use some support. Thanks!

Hi Linda, Welcome. You surgery date is just around the corner, it is natural to be nervous right now with your WLS being so close, it hit me like a ton of bricks the day I went to see the surgeons and schedule my surgery day, it all became so real:eek: Just remember why you are doing thid, you will be feeling so many emotions between now and the time the anastisiologist says count to one backwards starting from 100:rolleyes: Well almost. I know how the emootional rollercoaster is, just hang in there and please come back to vent or just chat and get tips on dealing with some of the fears. Tom

Linda-Welcome to the forum and congratulations on deciding to have WLS. Your surgery date is coming up fast and I'm sure you have a lot to do before now and then. I spent my time organizing my bedroom, bathroom and kitchen to make things easier for myself when I got back from the hospital. Just try to relax and do what you need to do now.

As far as feeling nervous, this is perfectly normal. More than likely you will feel a lot of different emotions the closer you come to surgery. Like what Tom said, it's going to be an emotional roller coaster ride so hang on tight. Make sure to come back to the forum to let us know how you are doing :) :) :)

Thanks to all who wrote me. I would like to hear more about what to expect when I come home after surgery and what your diet was like?

Linda-You will be given a specific meal plan to follow after surgery. The first week or so you eon't want much to do with eating anything but you will need to drink a minimum of 64 oz. of fluids daily. Sugar free Jello, popsicles and protein drinks count towards your fluid goals so it's really not that hard to get your 64 oz. down. Back to the meal plan. You will start out with clear fluids, then full liquids, then pureed foods, then soft foods. The focus will be on protein (60-100 grams daily) once you start the full liquids. Once you reach the soft food stage and can handle that you will progress to a "normal" meal plan that needs to stay high in protein and low carbs, no sugars.

You may have some discomfort or pain after surgery and this will be controlled with medication. If you feel the meds aren't working as good as you need them too then voice your concern. You will probably be sent home on liquid vicodine to help with any pain you may have You will also probably need to give yourself a blood thinner shot twice a day for 10 days, it's no big deal. You will have a choice to use Lovenox which are pre-filled syringes with very short very fine needles that you won't feel at all. You should be able to get up and down from a chair and walk arounf at home. Walking helps to ease your surgical discomfort and to help with the gas pains you will have, GasEx (or generic) also helps. Ev ery day you will also need to take a couple of multivitamins and other supplements for the rest of your life so you don't become malnourished, again, no big deal. You will have to go for blood work at least twice a year to make sure everything is going OK. That's all I can think of at the moment. If you have any questions just post them and someone will answer you :) :) :)
