Hi - welcome to the group!

The mental part is different for everyone. Remember that the WLS is a TOOL it’s not a cure. It jumpstarts the weight loss to get you going in the right direction. Follow whatever plan your surgical team gives you.

I would suggest NOT stock piling shakes, soups, vitamins before surgery. Your taste changes. What you like to drink now you may not be able to drink afterwards.

This is a great place to find support, recipes, previous experiences from other members. Best of luck to you staring your new life journey.

Thank you for this and I appreciate the feedback ! I was already looking into the shakes and vitamin's LOL I will look into it after surgery .

Try to remind yourself that food is FUEL. It's not meant to fix your problems or make you feel better. And eat good tasting, quality food. When you cannot eat a ton of food, quality matters.
I love Tracey's point about WLS being a tool. I know many of us thought, sure but when your stomach is an ounce, how much can you eat?!?! You'll be surprised. But that reset and initial weight loss is a HUGE opportunity toward a healthier and happier you.

Make sure you scroll down to read the Latest Resources. There are things there you won't find in the daily postings, and they're very important.

In A very real sense, there's a part of your ability to hear truth that is atrophied until you have the surgery. And the part of your stomach that speaks to appetite is partially or fully removed. It's not just that your big stomach is reduced to a tiny pouch. You don't secrete the hormones you did before.

It's helpful to visit the ASBMS website, where there is long-term, astonishing information.

Our input is important but this is a support group, not a clinical resource. That is an important distinction.
Thank you ! I will go there now .. :)

YES I have to remember that this is a tool and I appreciate your response ! :)

Good luck on your journey both pre- and post-surgery. You have found a very supportive and non-judgmental place to find information and others who will give you a virtual shoulder to lean on.

hi, my name is Mae I had the gastric sleeve April 15, 2026. I am 20 days postop. The mental journey is real at first I couldn’t keep much water down or any of the protein shakes. Stayed nauseous and wanted to vomit and stuff like that but I’m in the purée stage now and food. I can take three bites and I feel like I’m gonna be so full that I need to puke and the mental challenge is really hard because my husband still eats normal food and I can’t really have anything and my brain keeps telling me to go eat but my body won’t let me and it has been a struggle and a real tough journey, but I’m willing to fight this and get through it

Mae, do you have a follow-up appointment with your bariatric provider? I was given a prescription for nausea and it worked. But you really do have it rough, living with someone who can eat what he wants. Now, you will get to the solid food stage pretty soon and if you're a good cook, you can make up for all the denial you've suffered. You should do internet searches for bariatric recipes. You'll find a lot. And I'd have a talk with hubby if you haven't yet. He should be sensitive to what you're going through. As far as your brain goes, that's not your normal brain. That's your "fat brain," which we all have. You can fight it with affirmations. An affirmation is a powerful tool that your brain believes even if your fat brain doesn't want it to. Repetition is key. I hope you can find the time to feed your brain and get away from your husband when he's eating. This isn't a diet. Your body has completely changed. But you can go on a diet from obsessive thoughts. You can do this.
