I am almost 3 months in to the 6 months my insurance requires before I can have the surgery. My surgeon has recommended the gastric sleeve procedure for me. I have been heavy my entire life it seems and now I need a knee replacement surgery to alleviate consistent pain but of course my weight is a barrier to the knee replacement. I am hoping by having the gastric sleeve procedure that some of the pain will lessen as I lose the weight.

Having never had surgery in my life, at 62, I am apprehensive about the procedure and what it means for my life on the other side of the surgery. My family and friends that I have shared this with have been very supportive and are excited for the outcome and what a difference the weight loss will me for my quality of life.
My husband, while very supportive, is the one who is going to be the most effected by this and I am trying to convey to him what the impact will be for both of us. I should probably add that he is a very enthusiastic eater, not that he couldn't lose some weight himself, but has never had to deal with a weight problem like I have for so many years so has no concept of what I have gone/am going through.

Any input on the surgery itself and/or how to convey to my hubby how how lives will change would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Hello and welcome to the group, we're happy you found us. :)

Congratulations on your decision to change your life, you should be excited!

If you haven't seen it yet, I posted an account of my surgery day in our resources page: My Surgery Day Experience. I had RNY gastric bypass but I would think that this would translate to the sleeve as well.

Personally, this has been the best decision I've ever made. I have so much more energy, I'm off all medications and I'm so much happier. I am 3 days shy of my 1 year surgerversary and hit my final goal weight last month.

I'm single so I'll leave the advise about what to talk to your husband about to the married members here. :)

Welcome! At 37, I have had an unfortunate amount of surgeries all over my body. I mean, it’s not awesome to be operated on, but the outcome is worth it. My husband has watched all the videos with me for the dietician and surgery. He is very supportive of my choice to have the surgery, and understands that some of our family eating will change, but most of the meals I make I can adjust so that I can eat them. I mostly talk about what I won’t be eating, what I won’t be buying (I do all the grocery shopping), and he will ask me randomly if I’ll be able to eat such and such after the surgery. Usually it’s a no, not for a long time, but eventually I’ll be able to have a little. Maybe he could go to a dietician appointment with you to discuss the changes after the surgery?

hi, and welcome. I am 68 and have had both knees replaced. And my sleeve surgery was easier then the knee replacements. And they weren't really that bad, but that physical therapist must have trained during the Spanish Inquisition .......... It is great your husband is supportive, my wife is with me. Believe my your quality of life will be 100% better. You will get around better, walk into stores and find a better selection of clothes you can wear, and you and your husband happier. believe me you will not regret having the surgery after you have lost a fair amount of weight. Lastly, I began this journey last August I weighed 350. I got my sleeve January 7. and I weighed 290 a week ago, we went shopping and got a 57 pound bag of dogfood. I got it out of the car and carried in the house. It was a strain, but then I realized 6 months ago I was carrying that weight all the time. Boy I feel better.
