Hernia

So now I’m worried about uncovering a hernia during my surgery (Roux-en-y); some have said their surgeons located a hernia or hernias during the surgeries. How do the surgeons/dr not spot/scan for those in advance? Don’t most people have symptoms or even pain if they have a hernia? I do not know much about hernias, but I would think one would suffer somehow having them?
Just worried about extra downtime delaying my routine post surgery. Really can’t afford to take too much time off work.

Hi Ann Elizabeth, I had sleeve surgery June 11th and my doctor told me prior that he was going to repair a hernia which he did repair. Years ago I had some pain from this hernia, but none for the past 10 years. I did not take too much time off work - surgery was on a Tuesday, and I returned to work the next Monday. Thank you, Rosiemary! And gosh, what a turn-around after sleeve surgery! How are you feeling now?
I’ve never had (I don’t think) a hernia before, but I guess it’s possible.

Hi Ann, my doctor does scan for months before surgery for hiatal hernia‘s which I already know I have so that is going to be fixed during surgery but yes the recovery time isn’t much longer depending on the type of job that you have I think you’ll do great !

Thank you, SLbergeron! I haven’t been told I have a hernia, but just was worried they’d find one during surg. I have a scan on 7/29, so hoping there is nothing. I’ve only had 1 surg my whole life and that was a tonsillectomy when I was 7, so hoping this will be my only other surgery! When is your surgery planned?

It will be Nov or Dec! I have to have a 6 month monitored diet by the dr first
