I'm a week from 2 months post op. I've lost 32 lbs. I was sick for 2 weeks and thought it was Covid-19. Thank goodness the results were negative. It was a stomach bug. I couldn't eat for 4 days straight. I just drank water and had sugar free Popsicles so I wouldn't be dehydrated though I ended up in the hospital for being dehydrated. I'm better now, but I'm hungry all the time especially at night. It's starting to freak me out. I even gained 3 lbs. Prior to 3 days ago, I was down 35 lbs. Im craving carbs and I'm not understanding why when prior to being sick, I could barely eat all my food. I've eaten Nature Valley Salted Caramel Protein bar. It nets 9 carbs, 6 grams of sugar, but I am only taking in about 700 calories. I work out and burn 20 carbs daily and 150 calories, which puts to at about 550 calories daily. I'm freaking out a little because the scale keeps going up for last 3 days. Help!!!
 
How is your daily hydration going now? Are you drinking 64oz or more? Sometimes the need for water can be interpreted as hunger. That has happened to be often. Even if you feel you are eating enough, if you feel like your a craving something, sip on some water or another drink for 30 minutes before you decide to eat. If you need to eat a few carbs, eat a few carbs. As long as you remain in a calorie deficit, you will lose weight, but sometimes there are slowdowns and stalls. Eat some snacks that are very high in fiber with a low net carb count. That will often get me through a carb craving episode.

Kudo's for weighing yourself often to precisely track of your progress, and knowing how many calories you are eating. If you are doing things right - and by the sound of it, you are - trust more in long term progress than what your day-to-day weight tells you.

On a daily basis our body can do some freaky stuff like retain a few pounds more water today than yesterday, or not discard waste / poop for a week, etc. Post-surgery our digestive system is in havoc, our body is literally starving to death and our hormones are seriously out of whack. It's going to take a few more months for your body to stabilize and your weight loss to become predictable (and much, much less rapid).

I weigh in on Friday mornings. My routine is to wake up, pee, step on the scales and write it down. Consider adopting a similar routine - something you can do the same way & time every week - and still plan on seeing occasional numbers that don't make sense. I certainly know it's difficult to not weigh every day especially when you are losing weight like crazy and it's an incredibly wonderful feeling to see those numbers drop and drop after so many years of struggle.

11 months out my weight is holding steady for a couple months now but I still see 1-2 pound fluctuations from week to week.

Thanks and will try adopting your routine of weighing once a week. It's so hard though because I'm noisy, but it will probably help me not get discouraged. Thank you for the insight!

I usually follow these steps when I feel like I'm hungry, but I know I shouldn't be.
  1. Sip water or another drink for 30 minutes.
  2. Take my water with me and go do something out of sight of the kitchen...if you are at work, dive into a work project, if you are at home, maybe work on something creative, a hobby, or outside, or go for a casual walk for 30 minutes.
  3. Live with being hungry for a while. Realize that it's not going to derail or kill you and just get used to the feeling.
  4. Have a snack or a meal with protein and filling high fiber low net carb food.
Having a snack is okay. Eating 1000 calories one day instead of 700 is okay; it is still a calorie deficit for a day without exercise.

Sometimes after I do my 30-minute water sip I realize that I'm in between breakfast/lunch or lunch/dinner and that is a totally appropriate time for a snack anyway. Don't stress over it. You don't need to be totally uncomfortable. I would definitely try to increase your water intake though based on what you said. That can make a huge difference for some people.
