I been out since 2002, had y-surgery, had my surgery in Ft.Lauderdale, Dr. Perez. Was member of the Ft. Lauderdale Bariatric group and support , day one of going to the meetings and listing to members going into approval of surgery, those 1 or 3 weeks out, and so forth. Did well with surgery , and still doing fairly well. I had hic-ups along the road. Had ucler bleed behind pouch, knowing better than to use aspirin but also had rotor cuff right shoulder, pain at the time was very bad. So used aspirin to cut back on pain, but the meds stayed at bottom of pouch, and ate thru the pouch, and into a artery. Which then proceeded to have bleed out, rushed to ER. Which at the time I lived in Burnsville NC. Took me in, found it was massive bleed. At the time started to give blood , and had surgeons and from bariatric dept. weight in on this. To repair the bleed, was not possible for re-surgery, 1-2% possible fail . So they tried meds to seal it, no avial, then they went in and burnt the leak and hope was good. Well 10 pints of blood later, sent home. Since then I back on track.
Keeping my weight steady. Still taking some meds for surgery, iron top of list. And some times still have bigger than stomach, its mind over stomach, constant battle we all go thru. And when I do get off the path, I pay for it. We are folks who like to gather around family gatherings, go out eat, etc....we get involved with talking to each other we forget to chew and eat slow, and small amounts. But so far to this date(5/8th)2026 all well.
But I need to ask among all fellow bariatric folks, have any having issues with throwing up and reflux , I do watch what I eat, but lately, seems more throwing up and reflux. I am going to see here in Kernnsville NC GI dept at VA. Did have xray done while eating and drinking prosses , and found that the food and fluid do want to return up to the throat. And been told I do have hylianahernia which does bring on reflux.
Since I am so far out from day one, its getting harder to find food that will stay down, and reflux down also. Any one so far out, from surgery are having issues with throwing up more, and reflux. I am taking meds from VA to help with reflux, but the throwing up at this time is still waiting on GI dept to contact me and look deeper into this. I would like to hear others who might have , or having and what some have done to help. I know thru all support groups, when ones answer of good results does not all ways fit with other folks. But to see their reply does give us all a picture of what they did to help them, not all of us their results do not always fit us. So one has to read, understand the issue at hand, and maybe it can help you, may not help some one else. But we all can reap in the issue and how it work to help or not> Thank you for allowing this post. I been to many groups, but now my years out, I want to return to bariatric folks and see and listen to their ability to work and fix their issue. But I know, we all have different issue and see other results from others, but understand when it helps one it may not help some one else. And for all the mothers, HAPPY MOTHERS DAY, be safe. GCW

Welcome! I can't imagine how scary all of that was. I don't have any helpful advice, hopefully you can find some.

Hi GCW,

Thank you for sharing your story. I also don't have any advice, but hope you can find the best doctors and medical people to help you. I can tell you that I met with one of my bariatric team members yesterday. She is a bariatric surgeon. I asked her about my hiatal hernia because even though my esophogram and endoscopy found it in April, nobody has explained to me why I have it and what will be done about it.

For me, because I have had my bariatric surgery yet, the surgeon will repair this hernia when I get my sleeve bariatric surgery. I told her that I'm 98% sure I'll go through with this sleeve bariatric surgery, so if I choose not to, how would my hiatal hernia get fixed. She said that my bariatric surgeon or my gastroenterology surgeon can operate on me to repair it.

I used to have terrible IBS and GERD symptoms every day for many years. For some unknown reason, those symptoms have mostly gone away for me in the last few years. No doctors give me the reasons why, so I don't know, but it's wonderful to have that relief.

So I don't have any symptoms that I'm conscious of when it comes to this hiatal hernia. Had it not been for those tests on my bariatric checklist, I still wouldn't know that I have it and my 4 stomach ulcers.

The bariatric surgeon told me that although I don't feel symptoms, they exist. Getting the hiatal hernia repaired will help my digestive system and overall health. To do nothing could cause the hiatal hernia to get worse.

So, that's only one doctor's information and perspective on these hernias, but I want to share it with you as you look for the right doctors to help you, formulate your questions for those doctors, and advocate for your health.

I hope you get the best medical care possible and get to feeling better soon, GCW. Take care.
