Intro and questiong: Can anyone share their experience with gastric plication

Hi! I'm getting really terrified about my surgery in January. I happened upon this board and found many post to be uplifting and supportive. I am scheduled for the plication. Has anyone had this procedure? I would like to be back to work within a week and I'd like to hear how fast the recoveries were for others. Also, I have 3 children and I'm afraid I will come out of the surgery worse than when I went in, or not come out at all.

Thanks in advance for the support!!

I haven't had my surgery yet it got postponed but, everything that I have read on this site so far people have been doing so well. There have been one or two that have had a few complications and their surgical teams have jumped on everything quickly and they are doing well.

Everyone's body is different and their reaction will be. The national statistics are extremely positive as long as you have an experienced surgeon.

I am a little over a week post RNY, and the statistics for my age and poor health were 15% for complications instead of the usual 0.5%. Knock on wood, my most serious complication was that I became allergic to any clothing that had polyester in it! I'm sure that will be funny some day. lol Pic a 63 yr old overweight woman walking around the house, wearing only a drainage tube. I'm sure there is a Maxine comic in there somewhere.

No matter what surgery you have, you need to recover, so I hope you will have at least a few days worth of help with the kids. You need to recoup and rushing things will only postpone the healing process. I am moving around, but not too much bending. I will take at least a month off work.

Lately, what type of surgery is the plication? Is that "re-routing" and

welcome to the group. You will learn a lot here!

You guys are great! I'm feeling a lot better now!! By leaps and bounds. I know the plication rates of complications are very low. I'm much more confident now. I can't wait for my appointment on Monday.

"Gastric Plication decreases the size of the stomach without removing sections of the stomach or implanting devices. Gastric Plication decreases the volume of the stomach by folding the stomach inwardly and suturing the folds, reducing the stomach volume and therefore limiting food intake"

Each surgery procedure has it's own set of complications. Then you have to look at the overall complications of anesthesia, your health issues, and the surgeons and his teams skill set.

From what I read on your procedure. It is very new and still in the investigational stages.

"What Are The Risks Of Laparoscopic Gastric Plication?
There are risks that are common to any laparoscopic procedure such as bleeding, infection, injury to other organs, or the need to convert to an open procedure. There is also a small risk of a leak from the suture line used to imbricate/plicate ("fold") the stomach. These problems are rare and major complications occur less than 1% of the time." - Thanks Cleveland CLinic

I am 3 weeks and 3 days out from my R-N-Y and am doing great. I had the same anxieties about anesthesia, thankfully that is a common anxiety.

Do you have someone at home to help with the kids for the first 2 weeks?
You need to get your rest and get used to the changes in your body and eating style.

Thank you for the information. I've done so much research I could probably quote the articles lol. I was hoping someone here could share their experience.

More info on me is I am 32 & the kids are 13, 6, & 4. I have a great support team from my immediate family, but I'm not telling anyone other than immediate family about surgery until it's over.

The gastric plication is a really new procedure. I don't recall anyone on this site having that surgery. Are you self-pay? I know for the sleeve it has just recently been paid by the insurance companies because of it's "newness". BTW, they call 'new' anything that doesn't have 5 years of data attached to it.
Don't worry about coming out of the surgery. The odds are so rare and you're young and presumably healthy. Your kids will greatly benefit from your new lifestyle and better eating habits. This is a good thing.

Thank you. There as few doctors in my area who do the surgery. I know a lot of people have it done in Mexico. I chose to do mine here in the US.

I have read about plication. I am 3 weeks out from my VSG surgery. I'm down 26lbs. It has been a little bewildering for me at first. But I am getting more used to it every day. When it feels 'normal' that will be excellent. I have found a lot of help by watching all of the youtube videos. Not just about the sleeve but about the R&Y and the band, I think it's all helpful. Weirdly, I find it a comforting thing to do to check in there and watch. :) God bless your sugery. ~twill
