Just Getting Started

Hi, I'm KelsoBelle and I'm just getting started with the process to have bariatric sleeve surgery. I've had my first appointment and am scheduled to see the cardiologist and the physiatrist later this month. I'm 68 and my husband and I live in an assisted living facility. He had a stroke almost 5 years ago and needs 24/7 care. I'm still at the "I'm scared....am I really going to do this" stage. One of my concerns is that "they" do the cooking here. That's part of the problem as both my husband and I have gained weight in the two years we've been here. I need to have a one-on-one talked with the head nurse and with the young woman in charge of the kitchen. I could use any encouragement you have to give. Thanks so much!

Hi KelsoBelle! I was 67 when I had gastric sleeve surgery last year. So glad I did! When your surgeon/nutritionist give you your pre and post op food plans, share them with the assisted living folks. Usually, the foods are not that complicated, so they should be able to accommodate you.

Thank you, Diane, for your most helpful post. Your brother was blessed to have you fighting for him. We are at the supposed "best" assisted living facility about 2 hours south of you. However, I do know that friends who are diabetic have to order the things they are supposed to eat. If they order terrible things, that's what they will be served. Even now, as I've started changing what I order, cutting out some of the "comfort foods" that they so like to serve, I find that the kitchen is still serving me foods that I don't order. The building is currently in the 4th week of lockdown due to Covid, so they are bringing our meals to the apartments. I definitely need to schedule a time with the "powers that be" and get tough. (BTW, three generations of our family went to Seattle Pacific University.)
