I had a gastric bypass with a hiatal hernia repair on 8/29/19. Minimal pain, liquids going down fine but having some heartburn which prevents me from laying flat. Sucks because I never had heartburn before when on meds that I am still taking. I have my one week post op check tomorrow but wondering how normal Heartburn or reflux is.

The 1 oz of liquids every 15 mins is a pain in the butt and hard to get the 80-100 grams of protein & 64 oz fluids. IF tolerated is 2 oz every 15 ok? I tried it with no problems and also had a cup of broth in one sitting with no problems. I imagine food phase will be another story?

First off, congratulations on your successful surgery and welcome. From what I recall, 1 oz of water every 15 minutes was a minimum. If you can move up to 2 oz with no trouble, that's great!

Solid foods is definitely different, you'll want to pace yourself. In the beginning of that, my nutritionist said start with 1/2 cup, and see how I feel. If I'm good, work up to 1 cup. Make sure you're eating protein first because you really need it for healing.

Good luck! We're here to answer any questions we can. :)

Thanks you two....I had my check up today and dr said the heartburn isn’t normal but should pass. I don’t have to monitor the 1 oz per 15 min routine anymore and just keep liquid protein or liquid with me and drink as much as I can. I am released for driving, working and gym so happy about that. One more week of fluids then he suggested I jump to the soft food phase so I must me doing good if I don’t have to do purée for a week.
Brenda congrats on your 108 pounds. I like your weight loss ticker I’ll have to get one of those. Thanks for the tip on the 1/2 cup trial. I am thinking of starting with eggs which I love. What did you do? Did you just do 1/2 cup a sitting then call it good or add more after waiting a certain time? And if you don’t mind could you give me an example of one of your days diet? I’m going to check out a PIH support group on the 10th

That's great you did so well at the Dr. today. Thanks for the congratulations also. :)

In the beginning I would just do a half cup but after a couple weeks, was able to do a cup. It just took my new stomach a little time to get used to solid foods again.

That's great that you love eggs because my nutritionist really pushed them. I actually don't like them but forced myself to eat them during that soft food stage since they're so protein-packed. I always added a little shredded cheddar cheese for more protein and to cover the egg taste a little. I worked up to 2 eggs.

A typical soft food diet day would be a protein shake for breakfast & lunch, a meatball in some tomato sauce for dinner. For an evening snack I would have a Yasso frozen yogert bar or some cheese.

That's great that you have a local support group, they help so much.

It is another story. I had my bypass july 15th and i am still on soft foods. I was scheduled to switch but when i tried my stomach hurt and i started getting sick. So i kept my self on soft foods for another week. I will try next friday to switch again but kind of scared of the pain and throwing up.

Congratulations!
My nutritionist had me on 1.5-2 oz of protein and 1 oz fruit or vegetable 3 times a day and a mid morning and late evening snack of some sort of protein.
I am four weeks out and can handle max. 2 oz of protein and sometimes a bit of the fruit/veg but not always.
My doctor had me on a medicine for the first 30 days for acid reflux/heartburn. I did not suffer from it after surgery but I think it is just part of their routine.

I am glad your hiatal hernia repair did not give you much pain because I had two weeks of pretty intense pain but other than that all have gone smoothly.

I hope things continue to go smoothly for you.
