life after surgery

Hi i am Pat. I recently had a gastric bypass on June 6th. My question to anyone who had it done is how fast have they been loosing weight and is a slow weight loss doing it right? I have lost 40 and want to know if i am doing things right and am on the right track? Any response good or bad would be appreciated.

Hi Pat, Welcome. You must remember we all lose weight at a different rate so please keep that in mind when checking on everyones progress. The only way to know if your are doing thing right are is to aks your self a few questions; did you follow the meal stages post surgery, they may differ slightly among weight loss centers but they usually come in three to four stages, Liquid, pureed, soft and then regular foods, and all are portioned between 1/4 and 1/2 a cup per meal and contain between 60 and 90 grams of protien a day and a minimum of 64 oz water/fluid intake daily.

I was able to follow my meal plan for the first year as long as I remebered to eat, the fluids were the hardest part the first couple of months then that got easier. I tried to and still try and eat 5 to 6 small meals a day starting with protien first, also remember to not drink any fluids 30 minutes before and 45 min after your meals, it is ok to have a couple of sips but not a whole glass. I have to watch clories now that I am two years out but I am still doing good.

So in short are you waiting to drink fluids afetr meals, eating protien first, monitoring your fluid intake and getting enough protien. If you need to start making a daily log of your meal plan and when and how much you eat and drink so you can track your habits and see if you are getting to much a to little. To little protien and calories will also halt weight loss, the body will think it is starving and try and hold onto what it has and can even start to burn much needed muscle which burns calories more efficiantly. You also need to get at least 30 minutes of exesice a day and if you are one more thing to keep in mind is the muscle gain and fat loss will balance each other out now and then so it will look like no weight loss on the scale but you will actually lose inches, so please keep track of measurments. I hope I gave you a good place to start. Tom

Pat-Welcome to the forum. Weight loss varies greatly from person to person so you really can't make a true comaprison with someone else. As long as you follow your meal plans and get some exercise you are on the right track. When I saw my surgeon for my 6 month follow up he told me to expect my weight loss to become more difficult at the one year mark. He said this is typical because your metabolism slows down to match your food intake. My weight loss started to slow down over 2 months ago so every pound I lose now I really have to work for. This is just more proof that we are all different.

I think a 40 pound weight loss is terrific, keep up the great work!!!

hi Pat Krizlel67 welcome and congratulations on your recent weight loss, just think those pounds are gone FOREVER not to return, give yourself credit for what you've accomplished, try on your old clothes and see how loose and baggy they are , that will encourage you. I trust Pat & Tom for advice they've helped me alot since I joined here back in Jan or Feb. I get to have my surgery tommorow, so I have a zilion thoughts going through my head today and trying to get things done around my house for I know I will be limited for a bit, for I am having major hernia surgery and my bariatric all done the "open procedure", I wish I could find someone on here whose went through the same things I am going through surgery wise, my dr has said all along 1200 calorie diet and up til midight then nothing. but a part of me keeps thinking others have had to do all liquids for up to 2 weeks prior, I re-checked with nurse she said no he doesn't require that. had a protein drink earlier, someone told me I'd eat whatever I wanted it's your last chance, well I can't stand the thought of getting into surgery and them saying oh no we can't do this because liver too big etc. I quess these concerns cross alot of people's minds as we fast approach our turn.
welcome to this site it's full of great advice and I've had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful very helpful people.
have a good day
Donna

thanks for all the advice it really helps!!congrats on all your weight loss. if you dont mind me asking, how long did it take you and any issues with saggy skin?

Krizdel-Not sure who you're asking so I'll answer. It took me about 4 1/2 months to lose 70 pounds then things came to a grinding halt for almost 2 months. I lost another 12 pounds last month and nothing in the last 2 weeks. I need to back off on the carbs that I eat (mostly crackers) and add more proteins. Most meat is difficult for me to eat with the excption of mosit roasted dark meat chicken and canned meats like turkey, chicken and tuna. The other issue I have is exercise, or lack of it. I am disabled and use a wheelchair outside of the house and a walker and cane inside. I need a total hip replacement and have a LOT of pain even with pool exercises geared toward people with MS. It's also difficult for me to get in and out of the pool even with the aid of a lift because there is still a potential of slipping and falling. Plus I can't stand very vertical once in the pool so it makes things difficult to do. I do manage to do stretching exercises with resistance bands daily at home while sitting on my bed or in a chair.
