Hi, Im not sure if i am even in the right place but I am trying to find some help after gastric band surgury. I m having a terrible time with both food and with the fill they put in. I have ended up in the Er twice after the put in fill and they had to remove it. It is so frustrating, i feel like i am broken, like there is something wrong with me. I also don't eat any meat or fish so I cant find anything to eat. well I eat but not what I am supposed to. has anyone else had that problem? any advice anyone can give me. it would be really appreciated.

Hi Suzanne, Welcome. You are in the right place, also try asking in the General post op chat room, there are a few Band folks on the forum so they should be able to help you out more than I. You said you don't eat meat so it must be challenging to get enough protien in but that sounds like the least of your troubles right now. It almost sounds like they are over filling your band, I have heard these symptoms before and that was the case, I have also heard it takes time and multiple visits to get the band at the proper ristriction size, that is one of the many reasons I went with the RnY but we all have our reasons for which WLS we choose, the important thing is to get healthy. How far out are you from surgery, do they have a meal plan that is prescribed to you to follow? Good luck and keep calling your doctor until they fix it. Tom

Hello, Suzanne,

I got my lapband in March and have not had many problems. On the day you get your fills what are you eating or drinking? When I get a fill (which so far has been once a month) I have to go on clear liquids for two days, full liquids for two days then soft for two days to see if I tolerated the fill. The most they put in at one time is 1 cc of fluid. I find that if I really chew my food well and don't drink any fluids with my meals (no fluids thirty minutes before or after a meal) that I do quite well. Did the nutritionist cover this with you before band placement? You must always remember to chew your food well and sip your fluids. Are you using protein shakes so that you get at least 60 Grams of protein a day. I asked my PA at the Center about how they can tell if your band is too full and he said it is different for everybody. Each fill causes some injury to the tissue and that is why they make us do the two two and two thing. If there is any problem they will take out fluid. I really enjoy the shakes, scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt, cream of wheat (thin), puddings, jello and popsicles. the shakes, jello and popsicles count toward my daily fluid intake. How long have you had your band? How soon did you try solid food? I had to wait about a month before I got anything solid. Believe me, if I don't chew chew chew and sip sip sip I will be in pain and/or vomit. I seem to be tight in the morning so will start with a smoothie. I don't tolerate beef very well. I definitely think you should contact your surgeon, nutritionist, Nurse to find out what is going on. I hope what I experienced has helped and hope you solve the problems with your band. Come back frequently, many here are extremely helpful. Each procedure has its own little quirks.
