My husband Tim's paperwork got submitted to the insurance company on the 19th. The Doctor's office said we won't hear anything until Dec 3rd. We are hoping to have his surgery scheduled in December. He completed the sleep study this weekend. He has elected to have the gastric sleeve. He would have to be on a liquid diet one week prior to surgery. This is his last Thanksgiving in the old lifestyle. Our friends just don't get it why it's important and special. They don't realize that this is the start of a new life not only for him but for both of us. You see I am going to have the surgery next year as soon as Tim is healed and regains his strength Am I being selfish for wanting a special memory for him?

Enjoy your Thanksgiving and then dig into your new life. They say the sleeve heals much faster than the gastric bypass that I had, so you probably will be getting your surgery pretty soon, too. You and your husband getting surgery is a big plus as you all will be on the same page diet wise. Good Luck to you both!!!! :)

No your are not been selfish...but remember too, you will be making new memories when you are both post surgery. Thanksgiving isn't going to change, just what you eat will change. Remember what Thanksgiving and Christmas really means. You'll be able to enjoy the holidays without food being your FOCAL point! :) Good luck to both of you.

Definitely not being selfish. I totally understand what you are saying. I really like the way Landrethmom stated it...the holidays are a time of enjoying family and remembering what Thanksgiving and Christmas stand for not just food. We will be the ones with all the energy!!!

Hi, Deb here. I don't think you are being selfish in wanting a special memory for him but that memory doesn't need to include all the old foods. Make the memories from the people that are with you, the sites, the sounds that are included. If he wants to eat and can then let him, but if he has to be on the liquid diet then let that be his "Thanksgiving Dinner." I guarantee you his memories will be of people, laughter and good times, not what he ate. Enjoy!

You might hear back sooner than that. I was told 3-4 weeks for approval and I just got an overwhelming nagging feeling to call a week later for an update and the patient coordinator said you were approved and I am ready to schedule you for surgery. I was on her list to call that day!

No I don't think you are wrong to want to have a special memory for your husband. This too shall be my "last Thanksgiving" in my old lifestyle but, on a much smaller scale. I am now on my liquid diet and am having surgery on Monday Dec 2nd. Wow did I say that? Excited and nervous all at the same time. I am happy for both you and your husband you guys will be each other's support. Enjoy your Thanksgiving and good luck. Keep us posted. :)

What a wonderful wife you are to make this experience as happily memorable as possible for your husband. I hope you will have your own special moment next year when you start your own adventure. This is so romantic too. I wish you both a wonderful journey together toward being healthy and happy.

Congrats to you too TillyS on confirmation of your surgery date. Looks like we will be surgery buddies after all. I'm so happy for you.

I'm so excited I'm having trouble sleeping (posting this at 1:19am); tomorrow is pre op appt. lucky me our surgical team doesn't require a pre liquid diet fast, we do a clear liquid fast 24 hrs before surgery is all. I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving dinner within reason.

Congrats to all of you.

This is my first Thanksgiving post op now 4 weeks.

I will have turkey and some vegetables. Only it will be a much smaller portion (turkey 2-3 ounces) (veggies 1-2 ounces). I still enjoy the taste of the food. I chew it much longer now so the flavor lasts as compared to simply gobbling it all down in one feld swoop!

It is amazing how your perspective will change in a matter of a few weeks.

Food is still to be enjoyed but in small bites from this point forward.

Make sure you hubby gets the required protein. You will need protein shakes. The first week I used Isopure grape flavor; not bad. A little after taste but not bad.
