I just found this online support group for bariatric patients and am hoping it will turn out to be a great place for support before and following my surgery. I'm scheduled to have a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy on April 21 and am quite nervous about it. I'm young (26) and have never had any kind of surgery before. My family is largely supportive of my decision to embark on this journey to a (hopefully) better life, but part of me feels like it might be a mistake or like I'm going to end up failing. Are these feelings normal?

100% normal. Pre-surgery it can be really hard to wrap your mind around the fact that things will be different. Maybe you've tried dieting in the past and it didn't work out, or maybe you can't imagine not eating the way you eat now. Of course, there are just the normal anxieties that most people have around any surgery. It's natural.

The good news is, you can totally have a new, healthier life after surgery. You'll still have to make good choices with food and such, but it is different and there are many advantages from the surgery that help with the process.

The bottom line is, you can do it, and it's totally worth it.

Welcome! I totally understand the nerves. I had those thoughts before making the choice to say to myself,”I’m committed to this process 100%.” Now that doesn’t mean every day is fantastic, but for me it means that even on the bad days, I’m committed to not going back to old eating habits. I still have a treat from time to time, but that means far less than I would have before. It means reminding myself that I am worth this process.

Hi, Purple. Welcome to the group. I think it's great that you are having the surgery so young. It will give you so many more years of feeling great! Also, your skin is more elastic when you're younger, so while you won't miss out totally on the joy that is loose skin, at least you'll bounce back a bit. I still worry about failing and I'm almost at a year post op. I try to use that fear as motivation. I could gain it all back; it literally all depends upon me and my choices. Yesterday was a "snack all day so I don't have to cook" day so .. today can't be. I used to eat crap most of the time and add "healthy" once in a while. Now I do the opposite. You can absolutely do this. Some days are hard, but most are pretty great.

Thank you for the words of encouragement and reassurance that some of these anxieties are totally normal. It's nice to hear that making better choices will be a bit different after surgery because yes, I've tried and both succeeded and failed before. I know it's not going to be a breeze, but I'm trying to keep positive and look forward to the future.

Thank you for the warm welcome and reassurance that the nerves are normal. I am truly committed to this process and believe it can be the tool I need to live a much better and healthier life! i

Thank you so much for the welcome, words of encouragement, and sharing you're own experience and feelings with me. Yes, I know that it all depends on me and my choices after surgery, and I'm hoping that those good choices will become easier with each passing day. I look forward to all the support from this group in the future!

Thank you for sharing your experience with me. I'm three weeks out from Surgery now and feeling really good. Lost about 30lbs from my last office visit, before surgery, to now and I already am feeling a change and am super hopeful for the future! Blessings to you on your continued journey as well. :)
