Brand new to this group. I am in the very beginning stages of my weight loss journey. I suffer from GERD, Hiatal Hernia, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Heart Disease and possibly sleep Apnea. I was shocked when my surgeon suggested that I have weight loss surgery, I was just going for a consult on fixing the hernia and Gerd. It's not something that I ever thought about before, I was always active and my weight was manageable. The past few years my gerd has gotten so bad that it bothers me to do any exercise, my marriage fell apart, I lost both my parents, depression hit and the pounds just kept coming. But enough of the back story. I need to get myself healthy, I want to be able to exercise again and not have a constant flow of acid up my throat and if this surgery will fix that along with the Blood pressure and Cholesterol, Keep my heart healthy( I was born with heart disease) and if I have sleep apnea help me get that under control and then have the added benefit of weight loss than this journey is worth it. I have my first consult with the surgeon that will be doing my procedure on next Weds. and also the dietician. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Hi Wendy, welcome to the group. Of course any medical advice will come from your bariatric team, but you will find many people here that are willing to share their experiences along their journeys.

I had mild acid reflux, high blood pressure, & sleep apnea. When I discussed which surgery to choose, my surgeon recommended gastric bypass to take care of the reflux.

Since I had my surgery on July 12th, I had a hernia repair while he performed my surgery, I've gone from 3 daily bp meds to 1/2 daily, I've lost 31 lbs, and I feel great. My pcp plans on having me do another sleep study in about 6 months, but she suspects my sleep apnea is improving (not sure if that's the best word to use).

I wish you luck as you proceed through this. You will find lots of support & encouragement from genuinely caring people.

Welcome the door is open and you will find much here. I have acid reflux from my respiratory meds I have high blood pressure from low functioning kidney. I have a cpap because I have no filtration in my airways from oven blowing up in my face when I was 16. That was before all the safety measures were put on stoves. But I have learned so much here and feel I get the support I need. May your journey be a success.

Hi Everyone, I am new here and am so glad I found this site. I had my gastric bypass over 10 yrs ago, lost 60 lbs then slowly started to lose. In the meantime I have had my gallbladder out, I had a bowel Obstruction which required surgery, I had foot surgery on both feet, I had 2 knee replacements the latest being in June.. I was suppose to finish up my foot surgery in Sept but I am hardly recovered from my latest knee replacement. I have a host of medical problems. When I had my Gastric Bypass the surgeon just did the surgery and told me to eat Kentucky Fried Mashed Potatoes and Gravy for a few months-There was no support for those of us who had had the surgery. A couple years ago I lost 60 lbs but then the knee gave out and I was in a brace from my ankle to my thigh. I need help to get back on some kind of eating program for bariatric patients. It's nice to find fellow Berries and this site. It's time to get back on track and get this weight back off.

Welcome to the group! That must have been hard not to have any guidelines or support after surgery. I can't imagine being told to just eat mashed potatoes. Do you think it would be helpful to make an appointment with a nutritionist?
