Good Morning! My name is Judy and I had a sleeve done on December 8, 2020. I am currently in stage 2. I will begin stage 3 on Christmas Day. I have to admit it has been a process which I started in March but now I'm on my way to losing weight. The hardest part of the entire program is just having liquids for pre-op and stage 1 & 2. I don't necessarily get hungry but I do feel like I need to chew. I am glad there is a support group.

Welcome! Natural sweeteners or artificial sweaters or okish but neither are going to do you any favors. I know how you feel with the chewing thing. Even during the pureed phase I missed being able to have something crunchy. Luckily it passes.

Welcome Judy to our group - I'm Judy too! I use sweeteners but much less than I use to. I'm down to 1 cup of coffee a day now and sometimes have iced or hot tea with it in it. While it would be best if I could wean myself off, I haven't gotten there. My surgery was in June and I gave up coffee only because it was so hot this year. But once fall came, I started drinking it again but limiting myself to 1 cup. And now I have either the half-caf or decaf instead of the hi-test stuff. :) So sometimes small changes are better than none!

It's amazing how much artificial sweetener our bariatric practice encourages. I guess their priority is to make sure you get the fluids in and they don't want you having sugar. As I said before, I do use some sugar replacements but try not to use too much. Diane is right, you should consult with your nutritionist. I would be interested to know of other bariatric centers give you carte blanche on artificial sweeteners.

Good Morning! I am in stage 2, liquids. Can I use sweetner to flavor my tea? Or what is recommended? Thank you!

Hi Judy - welcome to the group!

I'm a "reformed" 29 year insulin dependent diabetic. I've used sweeteners most of my life. Now I tweak pretty much everything I eat/drink/cook/bake. I use honey, agave nectar, certain juices - depending on what I'm making - s/f puddings, maple syrup, applesauce, and at times - brown sugar, regular sugar. It truly depends on what I'm fixing. I make a "diet" lemonade with splenda - it's amazing! Talk to your surgical team to see what is ans isn't on your allowed list.
