New way to determine carbs?

I was told when determining the number of carbs in a food, subtract the number of fiber from the carb amount to get the true carb number. Also, to subtract sugar alcohols too. Have any of you heard of this?? The formula is similar to one used in Weight Watchers years ago.

PoohP, I recently tried the Atkins diet and it refers to carbs in a similar way. The way I was taught is to take your total carbs from the nutrition label, and subtract any dietary fiber or sugar alcohols to get the total net carbs. Sugar alcohols are subtracted because your body cannot metabolize them so they are just excreted out of your body and it is my understanding that fiber is subtracted because fiber pulls carbs out of the body as well. Hope this helps :)
