Newbie

Hi there! I just had lapband surgery April 11, 2013, so I'm happy to have found this support group. I live in Montana and my surgery was performed by Dr. David Rohrer at Benefis Health Center in Great Falls, Montana. Hope Cannon

Welcome to a great group of people. We've all been where you are at, or going to be. Ask anything you need or just rant. It helps.

Hi Hope,

I hope you are as happy with the lapband as I am. After trying every diet on earth I am so glad I made the leap and just wish I had done it sooner. Remember it is only a tool and you still have to do the work. Follow your eating plan, drink your fluids and remember to exercise. Good luck on your journey. Welcome to the Forum and good luck as you continue on this journey. Joy

Thanks to all well-wishers. I certainly hope the surgery was the right thing to do. So far, I've only lost 10 pounds, and most of that was on the pre-op diet. I go back to the doctor for my first follow up visit next week, and I suspect he will adjust the band.

Hope,

An adjustment sounds about right as far as timing goes but they should ask you several questions first. My first adjustment was at about three weeks and before I was allowed on solid food. They let me start solids a bit early like at four weeks instead of six weeks. Good luck. Just a warning, be careful in the mornings because that is when some bands are very tight. Mine still is. One of the staff members on my team had the same problem and my niece can't eat anything before noon for that reason so we all drink our breakfasts. See how you do. Joy

What phase of the program are you on? Every center is different and I was supposed to be on clear liquids for two weeks, full liquid for two weeks and then soft for two weeks and then regular. Actually I think I went to soft at three weeks and if I did ok was allowed to go to regular at four weeks. My niece's program was different than mine. After each fill you will probably be on clear liquids for two days, full liquids for two days and then soft for two days unless your program is different. Weight loss will come if you follow the program. Keep a diary - you will find it of immense value and know where you need to improve. Joy

I don't mind drinking my breakfast, as I've never been a breakfast person, so the tightness of the band may not bother me...who knows? I'm just a little dismayed that I haven't begun losing weight, yet. I am only 5'3" and was hoping to lose at least some weight since April 11th. I'm still just as fat as ever. I have followed the diet to a tee and do not see any changes.

Seeing the changes takes some time. I've heard that losing with the lapband is slower at first than the sleeve or RNY, but that in the long run it balances out. Keep following the plan, get as much exercise in as you can, right now mostly walking. Don't do anything else until your surgeon says it's ok, your body needs time to heal. Keep the faith, if you follow the plan, the weight will come off.

It takes time to dial in your band sometimes several months. I hope you start to see tangible results soon.

Hope,

I did not actually see any changes until I lost almost 30 pounds. It was like one day I was in a 22 wp (under five feet tall) and the next day I was in an 18 wp.I lost an average of five pounds a month. Over Thanksgiving and Christmas I felt good to maintain. My biggest problem is exercise because I have arthritic feet, hip problems and fibromyalgia. Some days I have difficulty walking. Just waiting for warm weather so I can swim again. This year has been strange and it is still quite cold for this area. I got fills every month for the first year. Remember to follow your exercise program and nutrition guidelines and the weight will come off. Joy

Since governor Christy announced he had lapband surgery I've been hearing an awful lot of jokes on late-night TV. What's so funny?
I've heard an awful lot of jokes about him too, BEFORE he had surgery. I guess he just can't win.
