Hi there!
I'm scheduled for RNY on May 11 2021. I'm 50 yrs old, 250lbs with chronic ankle, foot & knee pain. I backed out of surgery 10 years ago--chickened out! lol
I've twice tried medical weight loss with a blend of prescriptions. Both times I had success-50lbs. Naturally it came back with a few more lbs. After I chickened out 10 yrs ago I joined WW. I went to a Aqua Aerobics class, did home workouts w/ Richard Simmons & started walking . Once I was under 200 lbs I stared to go to a Zumba class!! I did this for about 4 years & lost about 65 lbs. Then .. My favorite Zumba instructor left, I Lost my Mom..I lost my fire.
I tried to maintain good habits & keep up my walking, but after some time I failed to stay on track.
This is my time to make a change for good!
Any words of encouragement, helpful hints are appreciated!

THANK YOU!!!!

Welcome! Sounds like you have a good idea what worked for you in the past, and with this tool, how it can further your success. You mentioned losing your fire after very difficult situations, and I can really understand. How will you help keep the fire stoked during hard times later on? One of the questions I was asked by the counselor was how will I handle times of great stress (negative and positive stress) after surgery, coping mechanisms, and a question I asked was what do I do when I get sick. I think being prepared for things like that, even though they’re hard to think about, is beneficial for afterwards.

HI Chrissy, welcome! Congratulations on your upcoming surgery! I find that it really helps to stay connected with others who have had WLS, so I'm glad you have joined this wonderful group. There's lots of info here to peruse over but if you have any specific questions, just ask. I wish you great success with your journey!

Hi, Chrissy. I also had lost (and gained back) a lot of weight twice before I decided to go for the surgery. If you start researching weight loss, you will find that keeping the weight off naturally is extremely difficult, as your body is using hormones and metabolism against you. Your body wants you to regain the weight you've lost. Once you've gain it, your body thinks you need it. The difference with surgery is it gives your body an actual "reset", so those hormones aren't fighting you. So, all those great habits you picked up during your other weight losses can actually work this time. Welcome to the group.

Thank you for being here! I have been reading a lot of the older threads/topics. Very informative & helpful. I guess I'm just concerned with how much of a drastic change life will be. Like, will I still be "me". Perhaps I've let my weight define me for so long..I can't imagine what I will be like without it. I know that my way eating & drinking will definitely change --but is that all that will change? I'm worried that my life/ lifestyle /personality will change..I hope not.
I enjoy our camper, boat, grilling, dancing, concerts, floating on the St. Lawrence River & having a few cocktails. I know that I wont be able to have any alcohol for awhile..& that's ok . I just don't want to come off as a drag when others are having a good time & I'm not able to eat or drink like they are.
Thankfully my Hubs is totally behind me with my choice.
Last weekend we hit a few of our favorite haunts & had some of our favorite foods & beverages. It was a great time! Lots of laughs!!
This weekend I will be starting my pre surgery liquid cleanse. It is a bit different than 10 yrs ago as they now allow protein shakes.
I hope the hospital gives me some good drugs upon arrival---I will be very nervous!!!!! LOL

I have to admit I was scared of that personality change as well. They talk so much about how people become alcoholics and get divorced after WLS, I was positive it was because of personality changes. It's not. I'm still me, not an alcoholic and happily married. It doesn't change your personality, but it also doesn't change any underlying issues.
You will probably enjoy all the things you listed even more once you lose the weight because you'll have less ankle and knee pain. Imagine dancing for hours and being able to move the NEXT day!! You'll still get to have fun. It turns out, it really isn't about the food/drinks, it's about the company. Good luck!

I was talking to someone who’s considering WLS and she asked me if I get depressed when I go out with friends because I can eat as much. I said, that’s a great question but no because it’s not about the food, it’s about the company I’m with. While culturally food can be a huge part of celebrating, it’s time we focus on who we’re celebrating with, even if it’s just a lunch date with friends. Celebrate memories, future plans, your friendships, and that will make a world of difference.
