Hey guys! I’m starting to get a little scared because I lost a ton before the surgery, but since I’ve gotten home, I haven’t lost a pound. My doctor says not to worry of course because a lot of people do not lose the first month, but of course I’m still concerned. I mean, I’m barely eating 600 calories a day. I just don’t understand why that isn’t causing weight loss. I wasn’t very active at first, so I thought that may be why. But by now, I’m averaging 10,000 steps a day. Why am I not losing weight? Has anyone else experience this? I think I just need to hear it from someone who has been there.

This is very common. Your body is kicking into "adaptive thermogenesis," also known as "starvation response." You've been going up and down in your levels of activity and calorie intake, and your body is worried that you might need to hoard those stored calories in your digestive system.

Your doctor is right. You shouldn't worry. I actually think worrying is another way to scare your body into holding onto that weight it's familiar with. And if you're only eating 600 calories a day, you actually ARE starving yourself. Try eating 1000 calories one day, 800 the next, then 900 the next, and back up to 1000, etc. etc. Your body will notice and it will get busy adjusting up and down. This actually triggers your metabolism to get busy. Before you know it, you'll start losing again.

Oh, and keep a journal. Write down every crumb you eat. Track your water. Document your actual activities. Don't be scared. You will adjust to everything and you'll feel better just by keeping track.

I’m also trying to follow a structured plan like Medical Weight Loss: Your Journey to a Healthier You. But by now, I’m averaging 10,000 steps a day. Why am I not losing weight? It’s normal to see little or no weight loss in the first month after gastric sleeve. Your body is still healing, dealing with inflammation and fluid retention, and your metabolism is adjusting. Even eating very little and being active, the scale might not move much at first. Most people start losing more consistently after the first few weeks. Keep following your doctor’s guidance, stay hydrated, and maintain your activity. Weight loss usually picks up with time.
