Not sure where I belong

Hello Everyone,

My name is Cristina and I’m not really sure where I belong within the bariatric community.

I have surgery scheduled in 3 days. My situation is different from most. I’ve had an ulcer for a few years now that has been preventing my food from digesting. I went through 4 EGDs with dilations and they didn’t work.

It turns out that my ulcer isn’t in my stomach, it is in my antrum. I was referred to a surgeon for what I thought was going to be a super simple procedure only to find out that wasn’t the case.

Because of the location of my ulcer, the surgeon tells me that I need to have my antrum and pyloris completely removed, a gastrectomy and a reconstructive roux and y.

As I happen to be overweight, my surgeon asked how comfortable I was with my weight. I’ve never really seriously considered wls in the past. He told me that because of the surgery I need, he could change the size of my stomach while he is in there.

Being 48, I decided to opt for weight loss to improve my health and hopefully my quality of life and expectancy.

I only had 3 weeks to prepare myself mentally for this surgery and to learn as much as I can.

But to be honest, I don’t feel like I fit in with others having wls because I didn’t have to go through the extensive process that others have had to go through. I don’t even know what to answer when asked what type of surgery I'm having. I feel like I cheated the process, my surgeon even said that I have the cheat code to wls because of my health issues.

Welcome to the group. Even if you're not in an exact type of surgery, you still belong. I hope it goes well too!

Regardless of the reason for surgery, you're still having surgery that will affect you like it affects everyone else here. You fit, and you're welcome here. We're all here for medical reasons of some sort, I had gastroparesis, reflux, gastritis, etc. This fixed my issues and I lost weight. Perfect. The information and support here are relevant to you.
