Hello everyone. I'm 45, childfree, single, and in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am also a bladder cancer survivor and ostomate. I have always struggled with weight and things got a lot worse since I completed my cancer treatment. I just started the pre-op process a few weeks ago and am here to learn and maybe even make some supportive connections. Looking forward to getting to know some things and folks.

Welcome!! what surgery are you having? most of all congrats on beating cancer. YOU ROCK!!!!
Thanks! I will be getting the gastric sleeve due to my complex medical history and ostomy. My doc, fortunately, has experience working with ostomates and I will be pre-emptively getting IV hydration post-op. If all goes according to plan, I'll be having surgery around the New Year. My only major concern now will be when I have to work out with the trainer at a HealthPlex associated with the hospital as besides being post-op, I'll have hydration and physical limitations due to my ostomy and not just because of the surgery. Not everyone in the medical or fitness fields is familiar with the needs of ostomates. I have no problem putting the work in, I just want to be safe doing it.

Hello and welcome. I think it's amazing that you've decided to continue improving your health for your bright new, cancer free future. It's great that you've found a surgeon who is versed in your ostomy. I would suggest researching fitness with an ostomy before you have your personal trainer consult. Then you can let them know what your specific physical needs are. You can even take in a hard copy of info that you need for them to know, if it makes you more comfortable. Trainers associated with hospitals are often more conscience of health concerns and willing to learn about the best way to train individuals with those concerns. It seems like you're getting all your ducks in a row early in the process, so that's going to help you long term. We're here if you have any questions or just want to chat about what's going on.

Thank you. I actually planned on doing that already. I'm president of my local ostomy support group so I have a lot of resources and know about ostomy fitness already...the main concern is getting someone who will listen and not push me to do things that I know I should not be doing. I also have neuropathy in my feet from chemo so that's a concern as well.

You are facing many challenges and conquered others. I am in awe. This is a great place to come and share and get support and ask questions. There is no judging here which makes this site one you will come back to. May you be guarded by angels and blessed in your journey.
