So I’m heading back to work in a couple weeks after RNY, and I never told anyone why I was out other than I was having a surgery. I want to keep it private, as it’s really no one’s business, but I also know I will be getting a lot of questions/comments as I have obviously lost weight. Has anyone dealt with this issue? What was your response? I don’t want to lie about it, but I feel I’m entitled to my privacy.

I work at a small company, when I had surgery I told them it was for a hiatal hernia (which was true). The pre-op post-op diets are similar and I usually eat lunch in my car so no one is seeing my meals anyway.
Anyway, I too am privater about it.
I had lost over 100 before, and this came up in conversation at work before.
So I easily explained it away as "Since I had to starve on the liquid diet I figured I should just stick with and get back to loosing weight like I have before"
No one ever questioned it, most people have commented on my WL thought but just in a complimentary way. Not asking questions or anything else.

This sounds feasible, I also had a hiatal hernia repaired. Thanks for the advice!

Hello, I kept my surgery private except for husband, mom, son, and my sister. When people saw me they would comment "oh you have lost so much weight, what are you doing?" I would say, I was tired of food controlling my life and I stopped eating bread, sugar, rice, pasta et cetera... If you tell people, they watch everything you eat and comment. If you say you are on a diet, they will try to entice you with food. I am doing great and still very private. This was my journey and I wanted it! Had GB April 20th and down 63 pounds. I weighed 232 now 169, looking to another six months to reach 145, determined to lose the 24 lol GOOD LUCK AND BE PRIVATE if you desire. It's really no one's business.

I'm opposite. I've told quite a few friends and my immediate supervisor. Almost all were very supportive, some very happy and excited for me. A couple were telling me horror stories. There are two people I know who had the bypass. One is still doing great after ten years. The other one is struggling, but not so much about food, more to do with alcohol. I'm trying to get her back with the bariatric team since she had the same doctor. I also have a friend that doesn't want anyone to know. I get it though, it's nobody's business unless you want it to be their business. My surgery is in four weeks. I hope I do as well as you guys.

I also told everyone, and I do mean everyone lol The majority of people are supportive and many people who were struggling with weight looked into the surgery. Of course, I did have a few .. There are always those people lol But I have always been very comfortable letting people know that I didn't ask their opinion. As in literally saying: "I did not ask, nor do I want your opinion on my life's choices."

Honestly, everyone has to choose their own path about how much they share. But, I personally felt that hiding it added to the stigma. If one person came away with a better understanding of the process, I am happy.

I decided to tell everyone why I was taking 3 weeks off. I even posted it on Facebook. I figured people are going to notice the weight loss and the fact my meals aren't normal meals. I just didn't want to hide it. And I've got to say everyone has been so supportive. It's been great.
