My Nutrition book says that the protein drink should be thinner than a milkshake, less than or equal to 5 grams carbohydrate and take 2! Hours to drink an 8 oz cup. The class calculated the amount of time it will take to drink the fluid and protein intake each day for the first two weeks after surgery to be 15! Hours!!! Basically you live to drink, and it ain't the "good stuff" either. I was told by a friend that she took small spoonfuls of her fluid because she was swallowing air when she sipped her drinks. I think she slurped instead of sipped, but you might try these suggestions. The nutritionist did say that it would be difficult to accomplish this fluid goal at first but to try as best you can. UCDMG requires all their post op patients stay within 30 minutes from their hospital is because dehydration is the most often reason that people end up in the ER after Bariatric surgery and they want us to be seen by their team of experts rather than anyone else. I appreciate that.
Good luck. I'm rooting for you. Sip. Sip. Sip.
