Hello everyone. I went in this past Monday for my gastric bypass. When I was visited by the surgical team the next morning I was informed that not only had I had my bypass surgey I also had to have small intestine resection surgery to remove a hernia I didn't even know I had. I am home now but on a clear liquid diet for the next 3 weeks. I can only have a medicine dose cup every 30 minutes. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this the normal procedure after this kind of procedure?

WELCOME to the Forum!!!

I had an umbilical hernia but my surgeon left it there. I would have been happy for him to fix it. Eleven months later I had it fixed when I had a hysterectomy. My stomach feels so much better.

It sounds to me like you had a hernia in your intestinal wall. You were probably lucky you had the surgery so your surgeon could fix it before it ruptured. I think the reason you're on a liquid diet for so long after the surgery is so that your intestine can heal and not be disturbed by food passing through it. I had to be on a liquid diet for 2 weeks after surgery just for my gastric bypass.

Good luck and hope you feel better soon! :)

Cheyenne,
Thank you for responding. I too had a hysterectomy but mine was done in 2010. When the surgical team told me about the hernia I teared up because after all of the times I have had ultrasounds and even an endoscopy no one had even told me that I had one. I was scared and grateful at the same time. I have some tests I have to complete in the next few weeks and I pray that everything comes back okay. Right now my stomach feels uggghh.
