Scared and Unsure

I have an appointment, today, at 9 am with a Bariatric Surgeon, to inquire about my having gastric bypass. I am 51 years old, 5 feet 4 inches, 239 pounds, to date. I realize that, especially, as I get older and now diagnosed with a Hiatal Hurnia , as well, this surgery may be what prolongs my life expectancy. Yet, I remain fearful of the, potential, post bypass surgery problems, including anemia, etc. Am I doing the right thing. I’m both frightened and confused. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Make sure that your surgeon and their team spends the time to answer your questions, and do a lot of research on your own. This site is wonderful for support. I also suggest Dr. Duc Vuong - you can find videos on You Tube, FB, Instagram, or at sleeveacademy.com (free courses and articles, etc.). His stuff discusses sleeve, but is for all WLS.

I am in 4 months pre op and still have doubts about the surgery, scheduled for sometime late April or early May. I am 4'11, 210 lbs with a history of roller coaster weight up and downs. I guess my main concern, but not my only one, is will I be well enough to take my planned vacation to Europe in October 2020 or will I be sick all the time. The surgery scares me, the recovery scares me the stories scare me.

Hi Stephanie. I hope you've been doing a lot of reading on this site, the experiences members have shared are priceless. Many of us have smooth recoveries, surgeons do these surgeries all the time these days. Complications are the exception, not the rule. Your trip, 6 months after surgery should be completely fine. If you're like me, you'll have lost most of your excess weight by then too! :) Keep reading and let us know if you have any questions.

My surgery was Dec 2 and I am going to a European river cruise in late Oct. It's late January and I am already in good shape for a cruise. You'll be fine.

Hi Kimberly -

I'm 54 years old 5'4" and 6 days post-op. At my heaviest I was 250 pounds. I am a 28 year insulin dependent diabetic, high cholesterol, asthmatic, and other health issues. I was 220 6 days ago - and 205 today. For me - it was the best decision I made. Following the Dr's orders - taking vitamins - and following the diets - I'm doing extremely well!

This decision shouldn't be made lightly by any means. It's also a personal choice decision.

Hello what made you chose the gastric over the sleeve?
