I am 56, 5"9' weigh 300. have struggled with weight most of my adult life. May have surgery in April. I guess my question is can you ever have small amounts of steak or fried fish or oysters or even a beer ever again. Most things I would never miss but those 3 make me think twice especially a beer. I don't eat sweets or baked goods or sugar so no problems there.

High blood pressure ,prediabetes, high cholesterol, hate the way I look ,hate the way ,I feel embarrassed to go out in public no diet success the last year. just tired of being fat. just nervous I guess . Small portions will not bother me I know that's what I need to live. Portion control has always been my problem. I am looking at the sleeve.

Hi Bill -

Welcome to the group. The foods you'll be able to eat will vary by surgeon. The main reason for the "no beer/alcohol" is the way your body will absorb it. Perhaps you used to be able to drink case of beer, but once you have surgery 2 beers (or LESS) may make you drunk.

My surgeon has told me no alcohol, steak, or fried foods for one year. You're retraining yourself / your brain / body to eat better, eat healthier.
I'm sure that after some time you can eat some or all of your favorite foods - just not a lot at one time.

Talk to your surgical team. Talk to your nutritionist - they are very knowledgeable and very helpful.

Best of luck on your new adventure!

Hi Bill- I had the sleeve and was afraid that I'd have to give up my favorite foods. At 3 months I started small tastes of some of my favorites. That was quite satisfying. At 6 months I'd have 1/4 serving. I'm at 11 months and I will eat 1/2 a half a serving. Smaller if it is a larger serving. The time after surgery was best spent understanding the nutritional content of the food and calorie content. I use the MyFitnessPal app to track all my food. If food and beer is too important to you then you aren't ready for surgery. If your health is your priority, then do it! The sleeve is effective. I lost nearly 100 lbs in 11 months. This group is here to help you, plus there are apps to guide you! Good luck!

My surgeon and dietitian prefer no beer or soda because of the carbonation. They say wine or other alcohol after a year. I’m ok with that. While I enjoy wine, and pineapple juice with rum on occasion, I’m more interested in feeling better. If that means stopping certain foods and drinks for an extended amount of time that is fine with me. I love to bake, and to cook, but with baking I taste test, a lot . I’ve already told my family that I will not be baking for the holiday season. I want my body and brain to have time to lose weight and psychologically prepare myself for the reintroduction of trigger foods.

Hi Bill,

Man, I totally get it. Those memories of enjoying ourselves usually involve food and drink, but maybe that's because that's all we did for fun. I'm sure we passed on the long walks and nights of dancing for hours, and even going out more often because of our own body image shame.

I'm thinking back to when I was healthy and thin and how much energy I had. How much I wanted to actually DO THINGS, not just watch others do them. I believe that you and I will feel that way this time next year and we will be so happy for making this decision and sticking with it.

hugs.

Hi Bill. I spent 7 months preparing myself for life after gastric sleeve surgery (which I had last week). I explored my relationship with food (more specifically portion sizes!), increased my protein and fluid intake, and upped my physical activity, I lost over 30 lbs before surgery but more importantly, I am confident and happy about the 55 more pounds to go. Surgery is one tool among many in your toolbox. Take your time exploring everything else you have going for you, and perhaps add a tool or two to your repertoire, to insure your success. All the best to you!

Hi, Bill. Ditto to what everyone else said. This will take work the rest of our lives. It has to be your priority if you don't want to gain weight back.
Welcome to the group.
