Struggling

Hi Carol, welcome! Some of the foods I ate early on was tuna fish, chicken ground into a salad with lite mayo, chicken with gravy (so it is moist), mashed white and/or sweet potatoes. In the early days post-op it will be hard to eat any quantity so it is important to supplement with protein shakes or add unflavored protein to foods. Gradually you should be able to eat a little more.

Hi, Carol. You didn't mention which surgery you had. The sleeve leaves you a bigger pouch so there is a larger area of the stomach that needs to heal. This can make it harder to eat so quickly after surgery. My program actually had sleeve patients do an extra week of clear liquids and an extra week of full, as well. Which I guess is not advice so let me get to it.

You do not have to 'eat' every meal yet or get all of your protein through soft food. It is okay to have 2 bites of scrambled egg for breakfast and a protein shake or a puree for lunch. Try soft food again for dinner. If that works, in a day or two, try adding soft food in for lunch as well, while still having a protein shakes or puree for snacks. These stages are set to help you heal and to help you adjust to solid food. You should never advance yourself but you can scale back a bit, rather than making yourself ill. Please discuss your issues with your nutritionist, as she is equipped to offer real guidance.

At 3 weeks I was just starting pureed food, but everybody's program is different. On average it took me about 2 months longer to tolerate some of the foods many others were able to. It wasn't until 7ish months before I could tolerate salad and bread.

Go at the pace your stomach will accept. Its ok if it takes a bit longer on types and amounts
