Guys, I need your help. Today my sugar got as low as 66. I'm only a week out so you have the idea of my diet. The doctor on call says to drink a fourth shake faster than the sips I'm supposed to. I drank half a bottle in a few minutes til my stomach hurts. Here's the thing: when I consume sugar it'll definitely rise but...yes there's a but, in approximately 2 hours it'll crash. Hence 66. I got it up to 96 with the half bottle. I'm so worried it'll go low even lower. If I am active like they say be it'll drop If I'm not active I'm prone to blood clots. Sigh. Advize me please. Thanks

Wow. I wish I could tell you what to do. The doctor sure doesn't seem like much help. In the time I've been on here, I haven't heard of anyone having these kind of blood sugar issues. Crazy thing, but since it is a liquid, you might ask your doctor about orange juice. We aren't supposed to have it because of all of the sugars, but it beats low blood sugar. Just an idea. Boy, I hope this is cleared up soon.

Another thing I ran across that might help is pickle juice. Rather odd, but is supposed to be a natural way to increase blood sugar. No carbs either!

Are you on insulin?

No ma'am. No diabetes meds at all.
If your blood sugar stays right around 70, you don't really need to worry. If you are having low blood sugar symptoms of course you should pay attention. I don't want you to just follow my advice blindly even though I am a nurse :) but I think you could benefit from talking with a nurse who does diabetes education. ( my specialty is high risk labor and delivery, and 2nd, emergency " bush" medicine) double post note..... I live in the "bush" of Alaska ;) having said all that.... people who are overweight and have been so for a long time, can experience low blood sugar symptoms as they transition to a "smaller" body. There is a shot you can give someone who is having a truly low sugar called glucagon. Maybe just having this around will help you feel safer. In people with average body weight and no disease influencing things, their blood sugar rises a bit with physical activities. Wishing you good health..... Debbie

I thank you for the feedback. But...when the sugar drops I feel physically lousy. I feel all the symptoms of low glucose lower than 85. I really cannot seem to function at that point. But I know it is ideal to have it between 70 to 99. At 99 I feel care free. Maybe even 110. But anything outside of that my body lIkes to complain. I decided to try Gatorade as advized. And it has helped alot. I will ask about the shot. It might home handy. Thanks again.

I am glad you found something that works. :) keep taking good care of yourself. Unfortunately our current health care system sucks in a lot of areas, one of them being when you have to deal with the doctor on call who may or may not know anything about bariatric surgery. :)

Ugh Carolyn, that sounds rough! I hope things smooth out soon, sounds like your on the right track! I totally want to try the breakfast essentials your drinking but the nutritionist tells me 'No' :( You need the sugar and I can't have it...we are stuck on different ends of the spectrum but they look so yummy :p

They taste good but only have half the protein the premiere shakes have. Even though you get more in a pack for your money you drink more daily as well. Thats only for the premade. I realize I need the Gatorade mostly because of the hydration. My mouth is soo dry throughout the day regardless of how much water I take in. I know I am getting the full 64oz I need. Or I would've passed out, lol. Maybe if you get to sample the Breakfast Essentials....

I had the dry mouth ick too! I read on here from someone that if you were prescribed a PPI that it was the cause of it, kind of like having cotton at the back of your throat. I finished up the acid blocker (PPI) two days ago (my prescription was just for the first couple months after surgery) and I don't have the dryness anymore, I hope this happens for you!
