6 Days Post Op; Should I Have Had Surgery During a Pandemic?

The road to my surgery has been rocky, to say the least. I finished my program on March 17th...only to have my hospital shut down the Bariatric floor for COVID. I had mentally given up on the surgery happening when I finally got the call, and before I knew it, it was the day of surgery. My sister was kind enough to come in for a week and stay with me, but she flew home this morning. Right now is the right time I’ve been alone since the surgery, and I’m just looking around like...now what? I wish I still had support groups to visit, but all in person groups have been cancelled for safety reasons. Did I make a mistake by having surgery during a pandemic?

I'd suggest you did the right thing; you need to take care of you despite whatever is happing on the world stage.

If you previously had in-person group support lined up, get ahold of the coordinator and suggest / ask about converting the meetings to zoom meetings. That way everybody can still join up in the safety of their own homes, still see each other, still share struggles & encouragement.

I totally hear you and can relate... my RYGB surgery date was postponed from April and I had it worked out in my head that I would have until about Sept before I head to get my head back in the game....as it turns out, surgery ended up happening June 15...I was thankful it hadn't happened during the first 8 wks of the pandemic but now that I'm on the other side of it, I'm gad I didn't wait until Sept... this pandemic will most likely go far longer than any of us could hope or even imagine...I'm glad you didn't put your life on hold to wait for something to end when there is no end in sight... I live alone too and had a rotation of friends with me the first 4 days...now I'm looking at the positives that I'm not constantly facing invitations to go out to dinner, etc. which I imagine would be hard to manage in these early months... I'm in San Diego and our support group just switched to virtual zoom sessions 2 weeks ago after 3 months off... I'm thankful they started them up again... I do encourage you to reach out to your clinic/provider to see about getting zoom sessions started up - it really is helpful... in the meantime, head here and your virtual community can offer support, guidance and the necessary cheerleading when you need it!!!

I understand how you feel. I was the last surgery that my surgeon performed before they cancelled all elective surgeries. I have gone over the pros and cons of having had this surgery during the pandemic myself. For me, I feel like it was the best timing. No specific errands to run like taking my daughter to school and sports. No temptation from family outings. Ultimately I think it’s a good time to stay home, adjust to a new diet and schedule, and rest! Wishing you a successful journey!

I 100% agree. I think in many ways, this pause on real life may turn out to be very helpful to those of us who just had the surgery, giving us time to focus on ourselves. Zoom meetings would be great. You can even Zoom with friends and family. And I am spending a lot of time outside. It helps me feel like I'm on vacation (instead of the in the middle of a pandemic) :)
