So, who do you tell and how much do you tell them? Personally, I'm of the "no stigma" camp, so I'll tell anyone I know personally, really. I have great support from my...simply superb colleagues who are offering to do figurative heavy lifting for me while I recuperate. They might also agree to do literal heavy lifting if need be.

I am telling VERY limited people but each person is different. I actually posted a thread about this when I first joined. You are almost there! Exciting. Good luck through the pre-surgery diet!

It really depends upon you and the people around you. When I had lapband surgery about 10 years ago and I was still working, I told everyone. I am the "no stigma" type of person as well. Since then I have retired and Covid hit so I don't see many people anymore, I only told immediate family. No neighbors, even though they see me walking and commented how good I look. I just say thank you. Most people just think I had hernia surgery, which I did. I didn't feel the need to go into details. Maybe because this was a revision surgery for me and I didn't want to share with everyone. After all, that is not as exciting as the first time around and I can just image people's judgment!

I think it is great that you have supportive colleagues, I did too. I even had a colleague go through lapband surgery the same time I did, we planned it together. So I really never have had any negative thoughts directed at me that I am aware of. But that was my experience. Unfortunately not everyone has that. I've seen many people here surrounded by others that are negative, even close family members. You need to do what is best for YOU. I wish you all the best!

I told and still do tell everyone and anyone. I’ve yet to meet a real naysayer, but I’m prepared for it. My godmother was reluctant to be supportive, but that’s because she used to be an OR nurse and helped with the surgeries when they first started and there were a lot of complications. I know she wants the best for me, so I wasn’t worried about her avoiding the topic.

Those type of concerns are "acceptable" in my opinion. I am ok with someone being concerned for my safety or wellbeing as far as having a major surgery. Just like any other surgery, the risks are always there. I am not ok with people having an opinion on what is or is not good for me, or right for me. Etc.

Agreed!
