Hello. I’m 6 months out from the gastric sleeve and I’ve lost over 80 lbs so I feel amazingly better but I still have about 30 more to go to reach my goal weight. I’m beginning to struggle with the same old desire to eat again now that I’m able to tolerate more and I’m finding it hard to find the motivation to control it and to exercise. I do have a lot more energy so I’m up and moving a lot but I’m definitely seeing a difference in my rate of loss. I don’t have a support group locally so I’m reaching out here to see if anyone can give me any advise.

Hi Tammy! Welcome to the group. Congrats your loss so far! 80 lbs is amazing! I am scheduled for my surgery this coming Monday, so I have not been in your shoes yet, but I am anticipating that struggle to happen eventually as well. While I may not have had my surgery yet, I am 50 lbs down from my highest weight. Getting here has taken about 9 months. I had a couple of times when I "fell of the wagon" and went back to old choices. After eating healthy for so long, I felt completely miserable by the choices I had made (not just mentally, my body REALLY did not like what I was putting into it). For me that was one of the things that then had me back to normal for the next meal. I know that alone is not enough to help. I would suggest meal prepping and planning. Have your meals thought out and ready before the day you need them so that when you are hungry, it is just as easy to grab the healthy option you have instead of the things that are only going to do you harm. Keep the variety going with your meals so you are not getting tired of what you are eating. The healthy options can be just as delicious as the unhealthy ones.

I know I have said it before on other posts, but I'll continue to say that the mental aspect of this journey is the most challenging. For me, I have seen counselors, asked a friend to help hold me accountable (almost like a sponsor) and done a lot of reading with various self help books that address my particular triggers to eat. I have a friend the swears by Transcendental Meditation, and I can see clear changes in her since she began. Other friends really throw themselves into the support systems they have at their churches. There is not one hard and fast rule for how to overcome the challenge and find your motivation. I have been looking also for a support group in my area because someone who has not been thru the process doesn't always understand, even if they want to. I believe there is a link on this site for local groups... if not, a lot of the hospitals will have info on support groups (be sure to say that you are looking for post-op groups, not the pre-surgery ones). I have found some on meetup.com (you can find groups for any interest you can think of on there!), although the ones I found are a bit far from my own area. Sometimes you have to break the motivation into smaller pieces... like just hold out for the next hour, or even if you don't do the workout you "should" do, do something other than sit on the couch - walking counts even if it is in the form of retail therapy, LOL.

Hi Tammy and glad you found our group.

Sounds like we're in a similar situation. I posted today because it was my 6 month post-op appointment and I'm experiencing my first plateau. You can read the great support and advice I was given here: 6 Month Post-op

I always knew that the weight loss would slow down but hoped I would be a little closer to goal before it did. Sounds like you did too. I've also recently started feeling some physical hunger again. I went five and a half months without any hunger at all. Cravings, yes. Hunger, no. So having that back will certainly be another challenge and honestly, it scares me.

We'll get through this!!! Please keep writing, this is a great group.

Great point eladams. None of us got to the point of needing surgery without having some sort of an emotional relationship with food.

I have been meditating daily since just before my surgery in March and I believe it is helping me a lot.

I'm also a big fan of the walks disguised as retail therapy. ;)
