Does Your Family Support You?

Both my husband's daughters gave us mostly baked goods and alcohols/wines for Christmas and frankly, I was a little hurt. Here's why... They're both experienced nurses, their mother had WLS 20 years ago, and one's best friend had it last year, so it's not like this is new to them. I know both the mother and the friend who had WLS aren't diligently following a post-bariatric lifestyle, so maybe they just don't know any better? Also, I didn't make it clear on my end how important this was, I just assumed they knew. My bad. I learned for next year.

Did your family respect your health and diet this holiday season?

I received both alcohol and store bought baked goods for Christmas. Of course at that point I was 6 months out and had mentioned I did a little baking. As we get further out, we are able to have a more normalized diet that may involve a glass of wine or a cookie. They could have thought about the fact that you are not far enough out to enjoy either of those things, but while insensitive I doubt it was malicious.

I was very outspoken as to what holiday food protocol was going to be like in my house this year to my family, and they all respected it. I said I wasn’t baking, so my sister and mom had my kids come over to their houses to bake (Santa had to have something, right?) I did indulge a couple times in a cookie here and there with no side effects. I was very satisfied after the small amount I had, but the point is, my family didn’t give food gifts since I was very clear. Next year I might be more lenient on it, but I also don’t want a house full of sugary crap. We’re trying to help our son get better with his eating so he doesn’t trod down my path.
