I just wanted to introduce myself to the group. I am new to this cite and wanted to find more people who have also had the RNY Gastric Bypass done this year. Mine was the end of May and I'm doing well. Just needed to compare some things to others... Hope to hear from some of you. Thanks :)

J.Lee-Welcome to the forum. Ask all the questions you want. Since the majority of members have had the RNY you will get a lot of replies.

Thank you very much!! I'm trying to get more active with support groups because it is a challenging journey filled with wonderful results so far.

I do have one question...surgeons are different with the post-op directions. I was on clear and full liquids for about 6 weeks after having the RNY Gastric Bypass. I went through a very difficult time mentally making myself start to eat solid foods. Has anyone else had that problem? I struggle to get 500 calories a day though I am getting my protein in most days.

I would love to hear from everyone who can relate... :)

J.Lee-My surgery was on 2/27/12 and I still have problems with some solid foods, primarily whole meats. I have to depend on canned tuna, chicken, turkey and cottage cheese for protein. I usually drink 1 low carb protein shake a day to get all my protein in. My surgeon recommended 1 to 2 weeks for each meal plan phase. It took me until week 5 to start pureed foods and I stayed on soft foods for over a month because anything more solid made my pouch hurt and made me nauseated. I never had a hard time eating enough calories because I got my appetite back after week 5, it is just the solid meats that I have a problem with. I even have a hard time with fresh / frozen whole fish even though the texture is soft and mosit.

My scale has been "stuck" for just over a month. I'm not making any excuses, I know where the problem is and am working on fixing it. I did lose very quickly in the beginning when I could only handle certain foods and my weight was exactly where it should have been on my last follow up visit 2 months ago. As long as your surgeon and / or nutritionist have no concerns about your caloric intake don't worry about it. Don't compare yourself to anyone else as we all lose weight at much different rates.

Hi J Lee, I had a problem remembering to eat for about the first year, if I was busy with a task and focused on the end result I would get light headed and dizzy then realize that I hadn't had anything to eat in a while, so it was tough because I didn't get hungry so my body would tell me in other way instead of hunger, the first time I did it I thought I was going to pass out, from then on I was more mindfull when I ate. I never really had any problems tolerating food except those which we shouldn't eat so I guess I shouldn't have tried them because I pad for it:p... I think as long as you can get your protien in and the doctor is not concerned keep doing what your doing, your down over 100 ponds and that is fantastic. Tom

Thank you both for sharing. All of our journeys will be different but I know I need to stay connected with others to make this a total lifestyle change. This is the first time in my life I can honestly say food is not controlling me....I'm controlling my food. I have started seeing a counselor and was supposed to begin physical therapy when I had to have emergency surgery on 8-1-12 to get my appendix removed; which by the way they said was just weird timing/that it didn't have anything to do with my gastric bypass. LOL I went from relatively no "real" surgeries to having two within like two months. I start back to work (again) this coming Monday. Hopefully, with the Lord's will, I won't have to get anymore surgeries for a while :)
Thanks again!!
