Has anyone here undergone a hiatal hernia repair?

In 3 days I’m scheduled for an Esophagram to see if I need a hiatal hernia repair. The doctor who did my sleeve will be performing the surgery if I need it. Right now I’m still healing from gallbladder removal surgery and can’t believe that my body will have possibly been through 3 major surgeries in just a year span. Would have been so nice to have all of this taken care of at the same time but that’s just not the case. If you’ve had this surgery can you walk me through where they go in at and how long you were in the hospital and then your recovery time at home?

I had my hernia repair at the same time as my sleeve. I was only in the hospital overnight. The healing process from the hernia repair is similar to sleeve, and you will be on liquids and soft foods again for a time. Much shorter but at least you know what to expect. The only issue I seem to have had with my hernia repair is I get the hiccups almost everytime I eat or drink. I also can't seem to burp since having the repair.

Did it cure your acids reflux issues and are you on any meds for reflux?

You'll likely be on meds for a while bit. But my doc says he'll start taking me off them at our next meeting, some 6 months after surgery. I had it all done at once. It should solve all your problems. I didn't realize that other people didn't experience heartburn like they were being stabbed.

So sorry you may be facing another surgery! Hopefully they will wait a little longer for you to recover from the gallbladder surgery. I had the hernia repair at the same time as my bypass and gallbladder removal. I have had zero reflux since my surgery and haven't needed to take the prilosec RX. Prior to surgery, I was on daily meds with 2 tums before bed as the reflux at night was awful. Gerd seems to be resolved at this point. Some people will stay on meds for awhile. I see my surgeon on Wed and will ask if it's okay to not take the prilosec meds since I took myself off them and have been fine. He may tell me to stay on them for awhile for some reason. Hoping for the best for you!!

You’re so very lucky your doctor checked on those things prior to surgery. Some doctors actually REQUIRE it but mine unfortunately does not and being that I had no symptoms of the gallbladder at least he felt no need to look into them further. However, knowing that all 3 of these things could have been done in one surgery hurts a bit… actually a lot. I have 3 young children that I’m homeschooling and thankfully my husband is laid off right now and able to help me a ton. We plan for layoffs as it’s just a part of his job so it’s definitely not a surprise to us. Saving over the years definitely helps us get by during these times. I’ll know by the end of the week if I need a hiatal hernia repair and when it’s being scheduled for. I was planning on my bariatric doctor doing it but he’s scheduled so far out (like months out) so I’m having the general surgeon who did my gallbladder removal surgery do this one. He said he can have me in within a week after we get all the results back. It seems really close to my other surgery but I’m healing pretty well and I just want this all over with, especially with vacation coming up in less than two months. The last thing I want it so be on a liquid diet while on our 2 week vacation lol.

I had a MASSIVE hernia. When my surgeon went in, he said he found it way worse than scans showed. I had mine repaired when I had my gastric bypass though. I ended up an extra day in the hospital. I had horrible GERD (acid reflux) I was on 2 medications, plus still ate tums and still had issues. Some nights I would be up all night throwing up lava! My throat would be raw the next day, and my voice was hoarse. I am now just over 3 months post op and I have had NO sign of any acid reflux issues. I am off both of my prescriptions and only on a pepcid prescription while I heal and to prevent ulcers. I believe I will be coming off of it at my 3 month follow up tomorrow.
Goodluck!

This made me so happy for you! It’s an awful thing to have to deal with! I’m also on 2 medications plus using tums. Diet changes were helping but now it seems like every little thing that didn’t bother me a month or two ago is now bothering me. It’s so frustrating. I hope to get some answers soon! Thanks for sharing :)

I understand that, mine had no rhyme or reason!! I could eat red pasta sauce 1 day and be fine and it nearly kill me the next. My doctor explained it to me like this... you eat and eat and the acid builds up and then that one meal pushes your stomach acids over the limit and you suffer for days until it resolves and then it repeats the cycle again.
The one thing that ALWAYS was consistent for me was going to bed after stuffing my fat face. haha If I went to bed full I ALWAYS had reflux bad that night... butttt it took me years to notice that pattern.
