Hi! I’m new here and have decided to get bariatric surgery. I have so many feelings and so many questions. I’m overwhelmed. It didn’t take long to get my info submitted and approved by my insurance. The clinic called yesterday and my first appointment is TODAY. Any advice on what to ask? Most importantly, did any of you get a second opinion??? I have two hospitals in my community. The one I’m partnered with is a “good” hospital. There is a more reputable hospital that I wanted to go through, but my primary doctor is affiliated with the “good” hospital. Should I get a second opinion from the bariatric group at the other (more reputable) hospital? Is it worth the trouble and getting referrals?
thank you in advance.

Well there are always many questions we don’t know to ask. It is time to do some research by reading posts. This will help you find questions you may want to ask your care team. I think the surprise questions are…..will my drip fluid after the surgery? Not a question most bariatric dr know about. What about hair loss, can this be avoided? If I have problems with nausea, how soon do I seek help? Be safe and be fun

Welcome! At my first appointment I asked a lot of basic questions about the process of approval, steps that needed to be taken for their clinic, what they expected of me, and what my goals were. At each appointment I’d have new questions I thought of between appointments. As far as a second opinion, I chose my surgeon based on personal experiences of people I knew, and he has an amazing reputation. Glad you found the group!

Welcome Hy-bee! It can be overwhelming at first. I would suggest tackling some of the posts in the group a little each day. Read what might be helpful to you and skip the rest as you are just trying to gather information and questions to ask your surgeon.

If you are considering between two centers in your area, do they hold informational seminars that you can attend and get a feeling of how their practice is or be able to speak to other patients who have used them? Are either of them accredited as a center of excellence? I don't think that you need to go to the one that your primary is associated with. It might make it easier in some ways but I think it is more important to chose the one you feel more comfortable with.
